Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Gabriel MannIf you recall, last year Gabriel Mann (C'95, Off the Beat) was the voice of Obama in Jib Jab's "Time for Some Campaigning."

In this new Jib Jab video, Gabe is now the "voice of reason" at the beginning of the piece (the first 20 seconds of the clip).

Music Mondays: He's Writing Music for Barbie

Monday, March 17, 2008

In addition to my weekly Tuesday Tips, Wednesday Websites , Now and Then Thursday, and Funny Friday series, it's now time to add another series associated with a day of the week: "Music Mondays". This series will showcase the works of many of our musicians.

I recently reconnected with composer/singer-songwriter extraordinaire Gabriel Mann (C'95) and he's certainly keeping the home fires burning...

Check this out...

- Gabe just finished composing the score for ABC's Carpoolers, and, is in the middle of three video game scores (all his video game scores are done with tag-team composing partner Rebecca Kneubuhl - see kneubuhlmann.com).

- He's co-writing and producing two songs for the next Barbie movie from Mattel (yes, Barbie) with Hannah Montana songwriter Jeannie Lurie and Los Angeles songwriting maven Amy Powers.

- He just performed and produced a cover of "All by Myself" with his new band The Rescues for the upcoming Superhero Movie (l, and is just wrapping up production for Irish songstress Naimee Coleman's new album.

- Gabriel's most recent album Tall Buildings is due for Japanese release on Sandfish Records later this year, and title-track "Shadows of Tall Buildings" was just announced as a finalist in this season's John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Check out Gabe's "Eight Feet Tall" solo from his CD release party this past summer.

Website Wednesdays: Showmethesetlist.com

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

In addition to my weekly Tuesday Tips and Now and Then Thursday series, I want to now introduce yet another series sure to be popular quickly: Website Wednesdays. (yes another illiteration associated with a day of the week). This series will cover the many, many websites developed by our undergrads and alumni.

As you've noticed on this site, I do a lot of posts having to do with music. ...So for my first post of this new series, I want to share Showmethesetlist.com, a start-up site from Corey Lorinsky (W'07, Sigma Alpha Mu, Wharton Venture Initiation Program) and Daril Vilhena (C'09).

Per Corey, this site "enables users to catalog the music concert experience like never before. The web site allows users to create individual pages for each live show. Concert-goers post song setlists, discuss and review performances, as well as create online galleries full of photos, videos, scanned ticket stubs, gig posters, actual setlists and more. It's like creating a virtual scrapbook page for each show, except much cooler."

Love Week: Celebrating 10 Years of Love

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

As part "Love Week", Mark Ayzenberg (C'09) sent me a sweet video of a song he had written and performed for his sister and brother-in-law for their their wedding.

Listen to "Ten Years Comin" here

Click to read the Mark's lyrics:...+/-

The Lyrics to "Ten Years Comin':

They met at golden slipper camp
Marc was a track star, Irene a badminton champ
Late October of 2005, Marc proposed;
I can't say it greatly changed their lives

Cuz it's been a 10 years comin'
They've been happy for oh so long
It's been 10 years comin'
And they're still goin' so goin' so strong

I had plenty of time to write this song

They went through so much together
Gave support and love no matter the weather
I know that for the rest of their lives
This love will continue to grow and thrive

From the weeklong business trips
To Marc cooking dinners throughout Irene's exam time flips
I don't know how they did it
Must be that Love of this kind is impossible to split

There's just one more thing I wanna to say
Their adopted kittens are great and fun for today
I'm all for family increase
But I'd rather it be a baby nephew or niece

Cuz it's been a 10 years comin'
They've been happy for oh so long
It's been 10 years comin'
And they're still goin' so goin' so strong

There's no better person
For Marc or Irene

Small voice, big sound

Sunday, January 20, 2008

While musician Gabriel Mann (C'95, Off the Beat) has shared the stage with Alanis Morissette and Jamie Cullum, nothing compares to Gabe's latest collaboration.

Click here to find out with whom! (this is classic!)

I just got my hands on a home video of music sensation Gabriel Mann. One of his hit songs "Eight Feet Tall", meant to be a solo is being sung as a duet. But the big surprise is how small the singer is upstaging him ...even calls him daddy.

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Gabriel Mann (C'95) and Jeremy Silver wrote and performed a beautiful song called "Make a Wish" for the Make-A-Wish's songwriting contest.

Although they came in 2nd place, this is a clear 1st place winner in my book.

make a wish
g. mann/j. silver

It’s hard to see
Where it all began
Did I really disappear?
Was a part of me
never really here?
I’m gonna find it

make a wish
Take a stand
You know I’m trying hard to understand
I’ll open my eyes
I breathe the air
I got these dreams and I’ll take you there
When you know I’ve had enough of this
So i make a wish

well I played that part
i’ve worn those clothes
and they always fit just fine
but when the day is done
the only one i want is mine

make a wish
Take a stand
You know I’m trying hard to understand
I’ll open my eyes
I breathe the air
I got these dreams and I’ll take you there
When you know I’ve had enough of this

every day, starts the same
i feel okay, but it’s harder and harder
to take my chances one by one
here they come again
you know I’m gonna

make a wish
Take a stand
You know I’m trying hard to understand
I’ll open my eyes
I breathe the air
I got these dreams and I’ll take you there
When you know I’ve had enough of this
So i make a wish

This musician's gonna "be like that" and I'm loving it

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

You'd think that after running Pennfest for 6 years, I would have heard of most musicians out there. However with this site and facebook, I keep on discovering great Penn talent out there!

Nikhil Dhingra (C'10) is quite the latest find.

Click here to check out his debut music video for "Be Like That" (directed by talented Penn undergrad Kevin McMullin C'10)

Nikhil has performed at many venues in Downtown Dallas and Philadelphia including Club Dada, The Door, Legacy Shops, World Cafe Live, and his single "Be Like That," has aired on the Texas radio station, The Ticket 1310.

Be on the lookout for this guy. I think he's going places...

This group has a good sound...

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

I've just been listening and watching new videos from the Penny Loafers new CD and recent Fall show.

...I must say I do enjoy them. I don't recall that this group was a favorite of mine back in 1996, but they really have a great sound.

Exclusive Videos!: Gabriel Mann (C'95) rocks out at CD Release Party!

Monday, September 10, 2007

On Saturday night I went to Gabriel Mann's (C'95, Off the Beat) CD release party. Gabe and his band took the stage and rocked the house! It was amazing to see how many people came out to see his show and (upon looking around) were mouthing the words to the album he just released this past Tuesday!

Some of my favorite songs of his are "California Rain", "Drive", "Eight Feet Tall" and "Shadows of Tall Buildings".

Besides having toured with Alanis Morrisette and having his music featured on various MTV and CW shows, I learned last night that there are some upcoming projects of his that will be pretty exciting ...which I'll report on at a later date!

Dueling Tampons Exclusive: 2 new Gabriel Mann (C'95) songs

Monday, September 3, 2007

GABRIEL MANN: Tall Buildings

Attention music lovers and Penn alumni Film and TV producers who need uplifting, catchy music for their shows...

Meet singer songwriter Gabriel Mann (C'95, Off the Beat).

Gabe releases his 4th full-length studio album Tall Buildings on Tuesday and per Gabe it's his "most fully realized material to date". I've been listening to it for about a month now and it is not only great, but it is infectious!

Per Gabe, "It's been in the works since I returned from my tour opening for Alanis Morrisette in Europe in the spring of 2005, and the songs cover some particular events from that period of my life, the lives of those near and dear to me, and places that are important to me.

Enjoy his music below!

Listen to Shadows of Tall Buildings
“I’ve always felt comfortable in New York,” says Mann. “And the title track reflects feelings I’ve often had there. Shadows of Tall Buildings represent our greatest expectations. Sometimes we fulfill them, sometimes not – sometimes we are relegated to the shadows, sometimes we are able to rise above.”

Listen to Eight Feet Tall
"Eight Feet Tall is about pressure, stress, and the difficulty of standing up to those who would bring you down, as well as the insecurity that comes with these pressures."
