What does one do after being in the spotlight on CBS' Survivor?

Ask Gregg Carey (C'99, Friars, Sprint Football, DKE) who appeared in Survivor Palau (2005).

Who knew?! (and let's not forget about THIS other Penn alum who was also on "Survivor"!)

...Gregg continues to be in the spotlight with his hot new email newsletter, named after the one luxury item he wasn't given in Palau - Toilet Paper!

After launching at the end of January 09, "The Toilet Paper, Daily News for the Thinking Man" published its 100th issue to its 15,000 daily readers last month.

She's Roasting Joan Rivers and It's Harsh! (NSFW VIDEO)

Last year I did a post about Whitney Cummings (C'03) being one of Entertainment Weekly's "12 Future Stars of Comedy". 

As you'll see in the above preview clip from this Sunday night's Friar's Club Joan Rivers roast, it is apparent why Whitney was given this title!

The video above is hysterical and definitely a not-safe-for-work video ...and Whitney pulls no stops when it comes to Joan's face!

Penn Wins VH1's The Great Ivy League Debate Showdown (VIDEO)

This week VH1 celebrated its new show "The Great Debate" with an Ivy League showdown in New York City between Penn, Columbia, Harvard and Yale.

Watch the video above to find out how Penn won(!) by defending both the "YMCA" dance craze and Obama as "the world's savior" in this "pop culture blood bath."

I'm sure you'll agree that Noah Becker's (C'09) mad rapping skillz helped Penn win the title!  Plus major points out to Noah for using the phrase "magnum opus" in describing the "YMCA" song.

Team Philadelphia Uses Their Brave New Voices to RIGHTFULLY Advance Into Finals! (VIDEO)

Drama alert!

If you saw Russell Simmons' "Brave New Voices" on Sunday night you would have seen that at first our Team Philadelphia didn't get into the finals...BUT because of their "brave new voices", they called the judges on a technicality of one of the other teams who got into the finals.  Apparently the other team went over their allotted time. As a result, Team Philadelphia is rightfully now in the finals!

While I have covered chilling performances from Josh Bennett (C'10) and Alysia Harris (C'10), last night was the first time we were introduced to Aysha El Shamyleh (C'10).  And while they didn't show Aysha's "Cupid in a War Zone" video posted on the HBO site on Sunday night's episode, I wanted to make sure all of you got the chance to check it out above.  It's yet another spine tingling, emotional performance by Team Philadelphia!

Per HBO.com,

'Aysha spits passionately about gender and social justice for the Middle East and all Muslims. "My first language is Arabic," she says. "And sometimes I feel really guilty because I cannot pick up a pen and write a poem in Arabic. Maybe it's because it's a very rich, sophisticated language, very difficult to use." Is there slam poetry in the Arab world? Aysha says, "Not that I'm aware of, but my sister and I were thinking we would love to introduce it to Jordan and the Arab world."'

On a related note, in this week's episode there was a moving clip from a performance where Aysha El Shamyleh (C'10) and Alysia Haris (C'10) perform together. Each were locked arm in arm and had their back to one another and were supposed to represent two different sides of a person.  I presently can't find the clip anywhere but if I should find it, I will post it on DT.

Let's all hope that Team Philadelphia wins next Sunday night in the Finals!

Melissa Rivers Explains Her Apprentice Boardroom Meltdown and References Penn (VIDEO)

If you saw "The Celebrity Apprentice" last week, you would have seen that our alum Melissa Rivers (C'89, Tabard) got fired and caused quite a bit of commotion after being fired.

I actually held off on simply showing a clip of the episode without allowing Melissa the opportunity to defend herself. Fortunately I found this clip from her recent appearance on a popular talk show  ...where she did indeed defend herself.

In the clip above, Joan and Melissa Rivers dish why Melissa got so upset. Also, note Melissa's reference to why her alma mater "the University of Pennsylvania" wouldn't be proud of her poor "annunciation and punctuation" in regards to calling contestant Annie Duke a "Whore Pit Viper" when she meant to call her a "Whore". AND a "Pit Viper".  Watch the clip above to see what I'm talking about.

Gabriel Mann's Music Featured Again in GREY'S ANATOMY! (tonight & next week!)

It's apparent that the producers of "Grey's Anatomy" must really love the music of Gabriel Mann (C'95, Off the Beat) and his group "The Rescues" because the show will be featuring their songs "Break Me Out" and their brand new song, "Stay Over," in back to back episodes starting TONIGHT!

• "Break Me Out" will be heard in episode 19 (season 5), which airs this Thursday April 23rd at 9pm (TONIGHT) and will be the 3rd appearance of Rescues music on the show already this season. (the song is featured in minute 39:54 at abc.com)
• Next week, on Thursday April 30th, the show will debut the Rescues’ song "Stay Over" from the upcoming album "Let Loose The Horses." (the song is featured in minute 19:45 at abc.com)

Partners in Poetry: 2 Pros Who Make Team Philadelphia Look Real Good (VIDEOS)

Have you been watching  Russell Simmons' "Brave New World" on HBO?  If you have, you would have seen great performances from our Team Philadelphia .

Highlighted this week on the show were moving performances from Alysia Harris' (C'10, The Excelano Project) and Josh Bennett (C'10, The Excelano Project, Brave New Voices 2008 slam champion).

• Watch Alysia's "That Girl" piece above ... it's yet another performance of hers that will give you the chills!  
  
• If that's not moving enough, then watch Josh's "Carbon Copy" piece above where he honors his love for his father directly in front of him.
  

On a related note, it turns out that Alysia and Josh met in their high school days at a diversity conference where they were both performing spoken word (and even dated for a bit!).

While the show has only aired 2 episodes, from the site, it looks like we should be expecting another performance from Aysha El Shamayleh (C'10, The Excelano Project) sometime soon.

"Slamming" Penn Undergrads on HBO's "Brave New Voices"

Over the years on DT, I posted about The Excelano Project, a captivating group at Penn that performs the Spoken Word.

Apparently, 4 members of this group have caught the attention of Russell Simmons and will be starring in Simmons' new HBO show "Brave New Voices" debuting this Sunday night at 11pm ET/PT.

Per the HBO site, the show is "one part Def Poetry Jam and two-parts documentary" which "features the finest young spoken word artists in the country".

Representing from Penn are Josh Bennett (C'10), Aysha El Shamayleh (C'10), Alysia Harris (C'10), and Chloe Wayne (C'10).

If you recall, last year I named Alysia Harris' performance of "What's in a Soldier", the "#1 Penn Video That Will Give You the Chills".

Best of luck to Team Philadelphia!

Watch out for them on Sundays at 11 pm ET/PT on HBO!

Todd Lieberman (C'95) will produce the film (based on the book) Grandma's Intergalactic Bed and Breakfast. Per Variety, "The story revolves around a boy who goes to visit his hippie grandmother for the first time and discovers that her inn caters to vacationing aliens, a secret that she has been able to keep from her small town."

Actor Roy Vongtama (C'96) will appear on tonight's "Dollhouse" (April 3) at 9 pm (playing a yoga instructor)!

Roy will also be recurring on "Days of Our Lives" starting April 21st and 22nd on NBC at 1pm as Doctor Richman! As you may recall from my earlier posts, Roy is actually a doctor in real life. How great is that!

Matt Kap's (C'97) band's (The Moving Picture Show) song "The Boy Who Lives Backwards" was featured this season in minute 10 of "The Real World: Brooklyn" episode above.

The story behind the song?   Per Matt:

"The Boy Who Lives Backwards" basically came out of a regret. I was going to take some summer classes at NYU and met a girl the first day in the dorm through a friend. She'd had a bad day and her friend wasn't around so I decided to try and cheer her up. We had a really incredible night but I was so shy at the time and thought she had a boyfriend so I didn't ask her out. Years later I thought of that while singing a melody and began thinking about regrets we have in life - the person we didn't kiss, the bully on the playground we didn't stand up to, the clever comebacks that we wished we'd said in an argument and that's what the song is about. It also really reminds me of New York City in the fall which is my favorite time of year."

She Got Hot in the Kitchen with Bobby Flay

Jordan Zucker and Bobby Flay on set

Turns out Jordan Zucker (C'97) isn't only commissioner of an all girls fantasy football league, she's commish of the grill as well.

Jordan just shot an episode for The Food Network's "Grill It! with Bobby Flay" due to air in season 2 currently slated for sometime this May. Jordan grilled up her Rib-Eye Hillard in an Earnest Grahamalada Marinade, Watermelon Winslow Salad, and John Daly's.

When one Penn alum checks in on another Penn alum...

Did you catch the very Penn alumni-filled Apprentice on Sunday night?

Donald Trump (W'68), Ivanka Trump (W'04) and Don Trump Jr. (W'00) were dishing out tasks to the new cast of The Celebrity Apprentice, which included Melissa Rivers (Tabard Founder, C'89).

And although he never made an appearance, Donny Deutsch (C'79) sent someone from his company with a very generous check to buy a single cupcake!

Watch below to see how much he donated and at what point his check finally made its way down to team KOTU!

Her Fantasy Football League Was Featured Again on TV This Weekend!

A few months ago, Jordan Zucker's (C'97, Kappa Alpha Theta, captain of UPenn Equestrian team, Stimulus Children's Theater) all female fantasy football league, "GirlsGuidetoFantasyFootball.com" was featured on the morning news HERE.

This weekend she and her site were featured on another popular news program. Check it out above!

Per Jordan, "We started out as all first timers and learned how to play together. Now we’re schooling the guys."

While the fantasyfootball season is over, you can still check out Jordan's site, and see her VERY creative, weekly video wrap ups which includes:
