When one Penn alum checks in on another Penn alum...

UPennDid you catch the very Penn alumni-filled Apprentice on Sunday night?

Donald Trump (W'68), Ivanka Trump (W'04) and Don Trump Jr. (W'00) were dishing out tasks to the new cast of The Celebrity Apprentice, which included Melissa Rivers (Tabard Founder, C'89).

And although he never made an appearance, Donny Deutsch (C'79) sent someone from his company with a very generous check to buy a single cupcake!

Watch below to see how much he donated and at what point his check finally made its way down to team KOTU!

His Movie Is The One To See This Weekend

          Friday, June 27, 2008

Bullets that can bend around a corner. Non-stop action. Cool special effects. Clever, creative scenes. Funny dialogue. And of course, Angelina Jolie. These were all of the things that still have me thinking about the Producers Guild screening of Marc Platt's (C'79, Glee Club) Wanted that I saw last night.

I honestly think this film was the greatest movie I think I've seen this year. In a nutshell it's about an underdog who finds out that his lineage is in a fraternity of assassins. Yeah..it's as good as it sounds! Check out the trailer in the widget above.

If you go out and see the film, be sure to notice how Marc Platt's broadway show Wicked is integrated onto the side of a bus, as well as on a marquee.

He's Producing Another Winning Film And That's A Fact

          Tuesday, June 3, 2008

The FacttrackerMarc Platt (C'79, Glee Club) will be co-producing a live action movie to author Jason Carter Eaton's children's book The Facttracker.

Per a great review for the book on goodreads.com:
"The Facttracker works in the Factory finding facts which the people of Traakerfaxx then supply to the world. When the just small enough boy, who tragically has no personal facts, is accidentally involved in blowing up the Factory, the Facttracker’s sinister brother Ersatz steps in, sets up a Liebrary, imprisons the Facttracker and convinces the people of Traakerfaxx that selling lies is much more fun and lucrative than selling facts. Can the just small enough boy set things right before the whole world is filled with nothing but lies? This is a great book that asks a very important question (What is the nature of truth itself?) without being too serious—well, actually without being serious at all—okay, let’s face it, the book is downright goofy, but also very fun and exciting to read. You won’t want to put it down until you finish and find out what’s going to happen!"
          More about the book here!

Penn Producer Debuts Movie Trailer during SuperBowl

          Sunday, February 3, 2008

Did you see Marc Platt's (C'79, Glee Club) movie trailer for his upcoming film Wanted during the first half of today's Superbowl? It looked really cool. (Marc's previously produced projects include Legally Blonde and Broadway's Wicked)

Wanted stars Angelina Jolie and comes out next June. Per Yahoo Movies, here is the Wanted plot synopsis:
"25-year-old Wes was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox. After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors--including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan--Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny. "

Talent & Involvement run deep in this Penn family

          Monday, January 7, 2008

Jonah Platt (C'08) is quite the renaissance man.

Not only can Jonah sing well, and not only is he the musical director of Off the Beat, but he started and sustained an improvised musical troupe "One Night Stand" for the past 7 years (with a show in Los Angeles this week!). Talk about being involved!

...Not a big surprise, considering he comes from an involved family of Penn alumni (his mother Julie Platt (C'79) is a University Trustee and his father Marc Platt (C'79, Glee Club) is a Hollywood executive and Broadway Producer).

Jonah tells me that at his shows the audience makes up the name of a musical ("Mongoose Diaries," "Thundercats in Love," "They Came From My Mother" and "Walk of Shame" are a few recent ones) and the troupe then makes up a cohesive hourlong musical right on the spot. Per Jonah, "We make up the music, the lyrics, the dances, the dialogue-- everything completely improvised with nothing pre-planned or rehearsed."

Check out this "Walk of Shame" clip from their performance at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Jonah is the one lying on the floor and sings at minute 3)

Jonah will be performing their group's international (60 min.) hit show, One Night Stand, at the Hudson Guild Theater in LA this week on January 10 (8pm), 11 (8pm) and 12 (8pm and 10 pm). (6539 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90038). Running Time: 60 minutes, Tickets: $15.00. To make reservations (323) 960-5773.

(I'll be there at the Saturday 8 pm show)

Their group then performs at the Dirty South Improv Festival in Chapel Hill, NC in February, then back to Edinburgh Scotland for the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where they made their debut last summer.

Stephen Fried (C'79) talks sex, love and dirty laundry in Husbandry

          Wednesday, August 29, 2007

What do America 's wives, wives-to-be, and ex-wives want?

National Magazine Award winning journalist and Penn alum Stephen Fried (C'79, 34th Street) thinks he knows and he's telling all in his new book, Husbandry:Sex, Love, & Dirty Laundry-Inside the Minds of Married Men, a collection of some 30 essays chosen from Stephen Fried's wildly popular column in Ladies' Home Journal.

From his website, "His smart, funny, touching pieces have America's wives talking to each other in a new way -- and talking, in many cases for the first time, to their husbands. Fried's Husbandry essays illuminate the mysterious and often maddening ways of married men, whether in love, in friendship, in the kitchen, the locker room, or the bedroom. Ranging from the sublime to the absolutely ridiculous, these pieces are wise, tender, and often laugh-out-loud funny."

          Husbandry
          Chapter 1
          -------------------------

EVERY JOURNEY BEGINS WITH A PAIR OF SOCKS

Let’s start with my socks. Not the ones I'm wearing, but the ones I wore yesterday. The ones I took off last night and plopped on the floor in the general vicinity of the laundry basket. Yes, those socks. Those size-thirteen socks that are the biggest source of discord in my twenty-year marriage.

When my wife, Diane, comes across my socks -- so close to the basket, yet so far from actually being in it -- the incredulity begins to bubble up inside her. And then we have "the discussion," which starts out about socks and ends up being about the evolution of the species. It's the same place the discussion about the dirty dishes in the sink ends up.

Now, this discussion about the evolution of the species is actually quite fascinating -- as long as you're not in the middle of it. As it begins, Diane, who has a high-school trophy on her shelf for "Best Negative Debater," poses this query: Are these socks (or dishes) left where they are because I don't remember she's asked me a million times not to leave them there, or because I remember being asked, but I just don't care that it matters to her?

While I'm trying to figure out which response would be better for the future of my marriage (or, as the guys in my regular half-court basketball game put it, "which answer gets me laid?"), my wife, a novelist who also reads a lot of science books for fun, asks a second question. If I don't remember (which is sounding more and more like the right answer here), is it because I wasn't listening to her all the times she asked, or is there something wrong with me physiologically -- an actual problem with the workings of my brain, some bad sectors on my mental hard drive? Then she notes that studies have shown that men's brains deteriorate faster than women's, and at forty-nine, my robust lobes have probably started shrinking to the size of raisins.

By this point in the increasingly one-sided discussion, the correct response is clear.

Okay, put me down for the brain damage.

If only it were that easy to escape the discussion. Usually, I am able to wriggle out of this inquisition because my wife knows that I wouldn't purposely do anything to make her upset. But I suspect she also privately takes comfort in the smaller brain theory, which is another example of the big lies women tell men about size not mattering.

What I would never tell her, of course, is that while I really don't remember that I shouldn't let my socks decorate the floor, I also don't really care. Sure, I care that it matters to her. But to be perfectly frank, I doubt I'm ever going to really care myself or even understand why it matters to her.

I know there are some men who undoubtedly remember to put their socks in the laundry and believe in that same-day dish-doing thing. One of my two brothers is actually quite neat (we refer to him as "the mailman's child"), so it is possible for a man to actually care about such things. But most men I know don't. And won't.

When it comes to socks or dishes, Diane knows I prefer a good, messy pileup and, after a week (or a month) or so, a really good cleaning. For situations where bacteria and decay aren't involved, well, what's wrong with tidying up once a year?

After all, isn't that where the term "spring cleaning" came from?

I know there are some men who undoubtedly remember to put their socks in the laundry and believe in that same-day dish-doing thing. One of my two brothers is actually quite neat (we refer to him as "the mailman's child"), so it is possible for a man to actually care about such things. But most men I know don't. And won't.

One friend of mine believes that the real issue isn't remembering or caring, but rather the sheer volume of wifely requests. "Well, they go on and on about so many things -- I mean, how can you tell which ones really matter, anyway?" he asks, exasperated. "I think women need to stop every now and again and say, 'This bit is really important, so you can forget the last four hours of stuff I've been going on about.'"

While I have some experience with what he’s describing, I still think the reason I can't just throw away a cereal box with five Cheerios left in it lies in the fuzzy area between remembering and caring. So I decided to dig up some of those studies Diane always throws in my face about men's and women's memories and brains. It turns out that the most current work focuses less on brain capacity and more on the gender differences in wiring, especially for cognition and memory. The research shows that women have better "emotional memories" and better "autobiographical memories" than men.

This would support a theory I like: Men are physiologically programmed not to remember that they are supposed to care about stuff like the final resting place of their socks. (On a more serious note, the researchers speculate that having a better emotional memory is one reason women suffer from depression more than men.)

I found another aspect of this study especially revealing. This particular research was done by showing groups of men and women the same series of images and then asking three weeks later what they remembered about them. Apparently, the women found four specific pictures the most emotionally intense. Dead bodies. Gravestones. Crying people. And a dirty toilet.

The women found a dirty toilet as emotionally intense as a dead body.

So, here's my query to Diane: It's bad enough that you're burdened with this horrific association; is it something you really wish on me?

Her answer, of course, is yes.

What do "business objectives", "go to market strategies" and "board of directors" have to do with dating?

Adman Donny Deutsch (W'79) tells us on the Today show this week.

Photo by ;Phil Bray - © 2005 Universal Studios.

Kevin Misher (C'87) to produce an untitled action film.

According to comingsoon.net, the film is about:

"a rough-hewn heroic tale about realizing dreams of glory, putting audiences ringside at high-stakes underground street fights. Tatum [O'Neill] will star as Sean Arthur, a young man who scrapes up a living scalping tickets in NYC. With family tragedy in his past and his father keeping him at a distance, this outsider has little to motivate him. A chance encounter with a veteran street-fighting coach leads to a whole new career for Sean. The ensuing bouts get tough, especially with the criminal element horning in, so Sean gets tougher. He will fight to win, not only the prize money but also the unexpected new relationships that are strengthening him."

Kevin is currently in post-production on Christian Alvart's Case 39, starring Renée Zellweger and Jodelle Ferland, for release this winter. For you comic book fans out there, I also see on his IMDB profile that he'll be producing "Sub-Mariner". His earlier producing credits include The Interpreter and The Rundown.

When I first moved to LA around 1996, Kevin was part of a bunch of successful Penn alumni at Universal Studios including Stacey Snider (C'82) (former Chairman of Universal Pictures, now CEO/co-chair of Dreamworks), Ali Brecker Shearmur (C'89) (former Exec VP of Universal, now producing deal at Paramount) and Marc Platt (C'79) (Executive Producer). It's great to see that they've all gone on to great success. Stay tuned on DuelingTampons.com for future posts about what all of these alumni are up to!
