His "Foray" into Characters and Camera Movements

Monday, April 7, 2008

Brendan MarnellIn addition to "The Lift" and "Ephemera", Brendan Marnell (C'05) has now sent us yet another animation he created during his senior year at Penn.

Per Brendan, "'Foray is more of a formalist exercise than anything else. I focused on designing and rigging characters, scale relationships, and camera movements."

This is a very cool video and the colors and vibrancy reminds me of one of those Dali paintings like the one you see below.

A Film Inspired By The Secrets of The South Street Bridge

Monday, February 25, 2008

A few weeks ago, I showcased animator Brendan Marnell's (C'05) "The Lift", an animated short based on the theme of "leaving college".

Today I wanted to share Ephemera, another great film Brendan did during his senior year at Penn.

Per Brendan, "It [Ephemera] was inspired by an experience 'discovering' a series of rooms built into the support structure of South Street Bridge. The walls were covered with layer upon layer of really great graffiti, and I could see people had been using it as a hangout for a long time. I tried to return to the spot a couple weeks later, but the entrance had been cemented shut."

His video metaphor for leaving college

Monday, February 4, 2008

There certainly are a good number of digital animations coming out of Penn these days.

Brendan Marnell (C'05) created a very cool short called "The Lift" for his Fine Arts thesis project from his 2005 senior year.

Per Brendan, "It's a short animation about a character leaving the world he knows to enter a future he cannot predict. He faces rejection, but ultimately finds a path for himself. Looking back, I think it has a lot more to do with my own situation of leaving school than I realized at the time."

Can you see this in the video?

Brendan currently works as an animator and graphic designer outside DC.

...Reminds me of another video I posted about a few months ago having to do with graduating from college.
