His Growing Empire Is All About Partying, Women and Remaining Uncommitted

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Aaron KaroAs reported on DT, stand-up Aaron Karo's (W'01, Pennfest 2006) multimedia empire seems to be growing rather quickly.

Thus far, Aaron's achievements include:
And today, his empire grows some more...

Aaron's 3rd book, I'm Having More Fun Than You drops today and celebrates the fact that although Aaron has turned 30 he remains on a "quest to party like a rock star, get laid with abandon, and silence his critics in relationships with the rebuke “I’m having more fun than you."

Per the jacket cover,
Aaron Karo
“Happily married people and perpetually single people are similar: We’ve both given up on dating and have merely chosen different exit strategies.” So begins Aaron Karo’s hilarious exploration of bachelor life, from the alcohol-fueled pursuit of chicks in bars to sophisticated advances on defenseless bridesmaids. As his thirtieth birthday approaches, Karo observes the women around him growing increasingly desperate to tie the knot and finds himself equally determined – to remain uncommitted. ... Irreverent, insightful, and relentlessly funny, Karo offers a unique glimpse into the world of guys who defy convention, morality, and their moms in order to preserve their independence.
Why did he write the book?  Aaron tells me:
"When I realized almost all of my friends were married except for me, I decided to write a tribute to modern bachelorhood. If you’ve ever gone to a wedding where even the singles table had couples at it, this book is for you."
Check out Aaron's video above to get a flavor for Aaron's clever comedy.  (Watch the whole video above which builds up to his great last sentence!)

This Self-Admitted Scumbag is "The Kinda Guy You Meet at 4am" (VIDEO)

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

I've got a cautionary tale to share from lawyer turned stand-up comedian Matt Rittberg (Penn Law 2005) about the guys a girl meets if she stays out too late.

Last spring, I wrote a post about Matt's now he has just debuted his first musical comedy video called "I'm the Kinda Guy" and it is funny! So funny in fact that I decided not to wait to publish this for my Funny Friday series.  And watch this video through til the end to learn about the other kinda guy you girls out there can also meet!

So what was the inspiration for this video?

Per Matt,
"A lot of my standup focuses on relationships and the ridiculous things guys say to try to get girls when they are trying to hook up (ex- the line about having an extra pair of gym shorts and the "no jeans" in the bed rule is something everyone who is single has said or heard before). Also, I lived in the Meatpacking district in NY, and I always see drunken girls stumbling out of bars at 4 am and random creepy guys hitting on them on the streets at hot dog stands etc. Watching those interactions (and occasionally partaking in them) inspired the song. More than anything, I hope it doesn't come off as misogynistic...after all, I'm warning girls and probably breaking some sort of guy code by giving away some of our dirty tricks!"

Since my last post about Matt, he actually quit his job as a lawyer to pursue comedy and is writing full time now.  He's moving to LA in September to seek representation and chase the dream!

If you like irreverent, funny videos like Matt's, you'll also love the videos Penn alumni Aaron Karo (W'01), and DJ Lubel (C'05) have produced!

Aaron Karo - Just Go Talk to Her
In addition to his books, touring the country with his act, a great appearance on "The Craig Ferguson Show", his new website: Ruminations.com, Aaron Karo (W'01, Pennfest 2006) just launched a new CD "Just Go Talk to Her".

Per Aaron's press relase,
"Recorded live in Boston at the Comedy Connection in Faneuil Hall, “Just Go Talk To Her” begins in a peculiar fashion - New York native Aaron Karo professes his love for the Yankees and Giants until the rabid Boston crowd showers him with boos. Those boos quickly turn to raucous cheers as Karo’s trademark brand of storytelling - fast-paced personal anecdotes about drinking, dating, and debauchery - win over even the most hardened Red Sox fans. Whether he’s divulging the secrets that all guys keep from their girlfriends or picking apart the foibles of married couples, Karo excels at taking universal experiences and turning them on their head."
Listen to his track below entitled "Chicks Love Sweatpants". You'll laugh your ass off!

Aaron Karo (W'01) Brings His Stand-Up to Late Night TV

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Did you catch comedian Aaron Karo (W'01, Pennfest 2006) on the Craig Ferguson show this past Friday night?  He performed a really solid act discussing his ruminations ranging from what it means to "go out" for  "dudes" and "chicks" ...to his clever late night booty calls.  Check out the clip above!

Aaron seems to be making quite a name for himself.  In addition to his books, touring the country with his act, and this Craig Ferguson show performance, Aaron recently launched a new website: Ruminations.com

Per Aaron:
"For the first time ever, you can now write your own ruminations and share them with the world. If you’ve ever been at the bar and observed something hilarious, if you’ve ever been in the shower or on the treadmill and had a thought you just couldn’t get out of your head, if you’ve ever read my column and thought, “Hell, I could do that.” – well, now’s your chance."

2007: Reflecting with my Penn

Friday, December 28, 2007

It's not often I pick up my personal pen about Penn. After the most surprising first year as editor/creator of DuelingTampons.com, I must thank you before hopping a flight to London to celebrate not just my birthday and the new year.. but the biggest gift of the year - DT turning 1 year old. As I sip a glass of champagne at 35,000 feet, I will be toasting you.

DuelingTampons' popularity caught the attention of the DP. Both Alumni Weekend and Homecoming Weekend came alive as DT had cameras rolling and brought you exclusive video coverage.

You might think Wharton's Donald Trump (W'68) got all of this year's glory as I tracked the who's who of Penn. Turns out alum Elizabeth Banks (C'96) ranks at the top of the DT's most famous Penn clicks. That came as a little surprise to the Hollywood actress/Penn superstar when I sat down to dinner answering questions about DT to friends.

Famous and infamous words flew out of the mouths of undergrads like Jessica Gold Haralson (C'08) when Playboy picked her out of the Penn crowd having come across her controversial smart-sex magazine. Jessica was quoted in Playboy's September issue talking all about how in her own words "porn is awesome".

DuelingTampons has become a habitual networking source for all things Penn. Over the course of this year, DT posted 400+ stories unique to the Penn community, 600+ videos, 300+ photos, and 400+ message board posts. The number of undergrads and alumni checking out the site on a daily basis has grown into the thousands from what originally started as a hobby and now has become a love of mine. I'm committed to DT's momentum continuing as the ongoing source to keep the Penn community connected.

In the new year, expect to feel more networked to Penn than ever. More emerging talent in film and music are on the radar. More business success stories are emerging from Wharton. More videos and photos from the past and present keep hitting the DT mailbox. It's proof that it really does matter who you know - especially when you share the Penn experience.

If you haven't done so already, please click here to add the DuelingTampons widget to your facebook profile. This will help to increase awareness of our creative community to other Quakers.

Make your hopes and dreams walk the walk in 2008. And know that I am very grateful for you being a big part of DT's success.

Best,

Matt Rosler (C'96)
editor/creator

Aaron Karo (W'01) celebrates 10 years of ruminations

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

Aaron Karo at Pennfest 2006

Stand-up Aaron Karo (W'01) has something to celebrate.

When Aaron was a freshman at Penn in 1997, he sent a funny email to twenty buddies from high school. That email spawned a regular email column entitled "Ruminations," which soon attracted readers nationwide. Simon & Schuster published compilations of the column in two bestselling books, "Ruminations on College Life" and "Ruminations on Twentysomething Life."

This month marks the official ten year anniversary of his book Ruminations.

Sample these 3 "ruminations" from Aaron's "best of" collection:

-"I’ve found that when I’m on the treadmill I tend to slyly glance at the person next to me to see how fast they’re running. Like we’re in some sort of crazy race that goes nowhere.

-"My college girlfriend recently got engaged to my fraternity brother, who she dated immediately after me. Like I always say, if you’re gonna lose in the playoffs, might as well be to the team that wins the championship. "

-"I think that people's reaction when I tell them that I don't drink coffee is equivalent to my reaction when people tell me that they don't drink alcohol. "
