The Toilet Paper

SurvivorWhat does one do after being in the spotlight on CBS' Survivor?

Ask Gregg Carey (C'99, Friars, Sprint Football, DKE) who appeared in Survivor Palau (2005).

Who knew?! (and let's not forget about THIS other Penn alum who was also on "Survivor"!)

...Gregg continues to be in the spotlight with his hot new email newsletter, named after the one luxury item he wasn't given in Palau - Toilet Paper!

After launching at the end of January 09, "The Toilet Paper, Daily News for the Thinking Man" published its 100th issue to its 15,000 daily readers last month.

Greg's free email targets males (and curious females) 22-40 with intelligent, edgy, and topical content.

Per Gregg,
"Where other newsletters like Thrillist, Daily Candy, Urban Daddy, and Ideal Bite offer some form of a lifestyle tip: a restaurant recommendation, a fashion suggestion, or an opinion on a new gadget, the “product” that The Toilet Paper offers our readers is relevant knowledge. As Ricky Gervais, creator of the hit show "The Office" preaches, “Guys love facts.” We agree.

So, TTP takes one topical news story from the headlines (Politics, Business, Sports, or Pop Culture) and provides entertaining facts, statistics, quotes, lists, and definitions that support that topic; we think of it as funny and relevant bits for a guy’s daily banter; at the water cooler, on dates, at the bar with friends. Our simple format also provides a compelling way for our advertising partners to get their product information out to a valuable demographic in an entertaining and informative way. We have recently been featured in the NYPost, RadarOnline, The Guardian, Askmen.com and numerous other sites."

UPenn Time CapsuleDid you know that there was a Time Capsule buried in the Quad in 1940?

Who knew?!

According to the American Time Capsule Database, the contents of the capsule apparently contain:
  • President Roosevelt's speech at the University of Pennsylvania's bicentennial celebration
  • Letters from each administrative officer of the university to his successor of 100 years hence
Anyone know where in the quad this was buried exactly?

Some Classic Film and TV Actors You Didn't Know Were Penn Alumni!

Monday, July 28, 2008

When I was an undergrad in Mask and Wig, there were a whole bunch of celebrity alumni whose caricatures were painted on the walls of our clubhouse that we always knew about, but you may not have...

Click here to discover some actors you've been watching for years on TV and film that I bet you didn't know were Penn alumni!

  • Alumni such as the Ned Wertimer (C'49), who played Ralph the doorman in the Jeffersons.
  • Chip Zien (C'69), an accomplished Broadway actor who also starred as the title character in Howard the Duck and starred in Into the Woods.
  • Another notable Mask and Wig alum is David Naughton (C'73) whom you would recognize from American Werewolf in London (see image above). While David has been doing lots of different projects since, last week a DVD of his came out called Brutal Massacre, "a mocumentary about a "a beleaguered horror director who sets out to make the movie that will put him back on the A list! Unfortunately for him, a quirky crew and penchant for mishaps don't make anything easier in this hilarious satire of low-budget filmmaking."  Check out the trailer below!

Wharton Student Stuns Opponent at 2008 Philly Fight Night

Sunday, February 24, 2008

Several months ago, I reported about a "Philly Fight Night". We're talking real boxing here.

Well, there's been another Fight Night recently.

Per youtube's mccopock1, "In a stunning victory for the Wharton Community, Itai Lemberger knocked out his Penn Law opponent at 2008 Philly Fight Night. Itai's match was the main event for the night, but it didn't last long; the poor sap from Penn Law was laid on his back 30 seconds into the first round of the fight."

One of their alum worked on the new Hummer H3

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Did you know that the Penn engineers build a race car every year for an annual collegiate competition?

Formula SAE is a collegiate competition held every year in May in Michigan. Around 120 schools compete with open cockpit race cars powered by motorcycle engines.

According to Gregor Zetsche (Eng '08), "Formula SAE started 4 years ago, and currently is sponsored by the engineering school as well as other sponsors (GM, Daimler and lots of other companies). We build the car in the Towne building on campus. Its entirely built by students from the school, most of which are mechanical engineers. We've had lots of people do internships at GM and other car companies, but we've only had about 4 people graduate since the teams inception. One of the alumni (Laurence) actually worked on the new Hummer H3."

Penn alumni make millions on holiday song

Monday, December 24, 2007

What better way to celebrate Christmas day than to give you some Penn alumni Christmas related entertainment news?

While Ray Evans (W'36, Mask and Wig) and his songwriting partner Jay Livingston (C'37) wrote over 400 songs for Broadway musicals, TV and films (including the Mr. Ed theme song), they were probably best known for writing "Silver Bells".

Who knew that this classic was written by 2 Penn alumni?! ..Now you do.

Click here to read about how much money "Silver Bells" has brought them annually, and how long they'll be collecting royalties!
All I'll say is ca-ching!
