These 4 Penn Friends Want You To Lend for Peace

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

What happens when 4 Penn alumni come together to raise money for a good cause? Ask (l to r in pic in left) David Fraga (C'07, Mask and Wig, Sphinx Senior Society, Performing Arts Council), Allam Taj, (Law '09), Sam Adelsberg (C'10), and Andrew Dudum (C'11).

In February, these 4 created LendforPeace.org, a non-profit microfinance platform focused on the Middle East and was recently featured on Fox Business (see interview clip above featuring David Fraga).

LendforPeace.org was founded by these four Penn students (two Jews and two Palestinians) on the premise that grassroots economic development through microfinance may help increase stability in the Middle East. While the founders disagree about a lot of things, it is hard to disagree about a mission of poverty alleviation and job creation.

Supported by such institutions as the Clinton Global Initiative and Ashoka (the largest association of social entrepreneurs in the world), Lendforpeace.org was launched on February 5th at an event on Penn's campus.

Zac Efron Wishes He Could Be in This Wharton Musical (VIDEO)

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

Wharton
While I don't remember this concept existing on campus while I was making my decision as to which college I would be going to, last Friday, Penn hosted Penn Previews for the newly accepted, though not yet matriculated Class of 2013. It's an opportunity for students to visit the campus, get presentations from their respective schools, and go on campus tours.

In other words, it's Penn's hard sell.

Over the past 2 years the Wharton admissions committee wanted their presentation to be more fun so they had Brian Tran (W'10) produce some creative short films. The theme for this year was "A Day in the Life" so Brian created an exaggerated Disney-ish "first day of class" musical.

WhartonSome of my favorite highlights of this year's video (above) include:
  • choreography in Wharton and Locust Walk that you just won’t want to miss
  • a girl’s hair being let down followed by a "hair toss" in Wharton before the big musical number
  • harmony-filled interludes
  • the "blackberry girls" (you'll just have to watch to find out about these girls!)
Directed by Brian Tran (W'10, Penn Singers)
Music and Lyrics by Kevin McAleer (C'10)
Choreography by Jonathan Rivera (C'10, Penn Singers)
Artistic Design by Veronica Decker (C'11)

Undergrad Class Election Videos Once Again Get Creative

Monday, March 30, 2009

UPennIt's student election season at UPenn and my facebook feed is loaded with lots of "Vote [insert name] for [insert position]!" tweets.

As I mentioned in my posts from last year, some of the more proactive candidates are really getting creative with how they are promoting themselves.  It is no longer enough to just canvas the campus and the kiosks with flyers.

It's now all about facebook election posts, groups and videos!

Check out 2 informative, creative and humorous campaign videos I've seen so far from Matt Amalfitano (C'11) for College Rep and Mo Shahin (C'11) for Treasurer.

More info and "more standard" videos from all the candidates on the DP site HERE

Now and Then Thursdays: Competition in the Library

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Over the decades there’s always been competition in the Penn libraries. It is true now as it was back in my day.

As we saw in one of my previous posts, Ben Grinberg (C’11) shows us that there are all sorts of characters one can find in Penn libraries. Specifically, he noted the “Library Ostrich” and how this character is “territorial and easy to anger” and “it would be a bad idea to cross her.”

Well in my “Now and Then Thursdays” series this week, I want to show you a class project video I did back in 1996 for Paul Buck’s class featuring one of these “Library Ostriches” and the comedic consequences of when she is crossed.

Featuring Jared Miller (C’97) and Julia Oh (C’98)

This year's Penn "Rich Girl"

Monday, January 7, 2008

There are all types of people at Penn.

These types seem to have stayed true through the decades ...from the animals we find in the library to the "princesses" we see around campus.

I just found this fun little video starring Amy Woodrum (C'11) which brings us a day in the life of today's Penn "rich girl".

This freshman really hates finals

Thursday, January 3, 2008

Before we dive into a new year of some exciting alumni and undergrad news (and I've got a ton of it coming soon), some more class projects recently have come to my attention worth noting.

As we can all attest, at one point or another, finals have gotten the best of all of us.

Having experienced his first semester of finals, freshman
Ben Grinberg (C'11) thinks the desire for success during finals turns all of us into animals.

See what I mean and check out his class project video for Video I!

Watch Ben's interpretation of some of the animals you'll find in Penn's library
(this is great!)

Starring:
Allison Karic (C'09) -- Turtle
John Vilanova (C'09) -- Rhino
Genna Erlikhman (C'09) -- Ape
Ben Grinberg (C'11) -- Writer/Director/Guy
Jenny Birnkrant (C'10) -- Cat
Megan Reilly (C'10) -- Ostrich
with voice overs by Sean Kelly (C'11)

His $1,000 kick!

Monday, November 12, 2007

Nick Trasolini (C'11) is $1,000 richer.

Click here to find out why!

At November 3rd's Penn vs. Princeton football game, Nick was picked randomly from the crowd to participate in the Allstate "Good Hands" Field Goal Challenge at halftime. The 25 yard field goal challenge awarded a prize of $1000.

Per Nick, "some guy just walked up to me and asked me if i wanted to do it. If I hadn't made it i would have won two tickets to the next home football game."

Class of 2011 Candidates use the web to promote themselves

Thursday, September 20, 2007

10 years ago student elections meant canvasing the walk and the kiosks with flyers. To be honest, I voted but didn't always really know whom I was voting for.

Times have changed.

Today, I'm seeing most of the 64 freshmen candidates create Facebook groups and flyers for their campaigns...loaded with photos, qualification and promises. Promises ranging from "stronger water pressure for the shower heads in the quad" to bringing "quality toilet paper to a bathroom near you" to "massueses and free snacks in Houston Hall"! In the microcosm of Penn, these are some of the issues that I'm guessing may resonate with freshmen.. Regardless they all have one thing in common... spirit!

Some marketing tactics I've been noticing for the big 9/24 campus wide vote include "a fact a day" email from one candidate to this forward thinking way of reaching out to students from Jeff Kaplan (C'11).
Click here to watch Jeff Kaplan's campaign video.

Something tells me that there may be more videos to come...

****************************************************************

Class of 2011 Candidates, I invite you to post your videos on DuelingTampons.com.

****************************************************************

Jeff isn't the only one in student government using video to reach out to the student masses. It seems like videos are also being used by UA chair Jason Karsh (C'08).

Check out Jason's fun spirited video (which also shows off the campus)

PENNarts: ...Penn's Performing arts future looking bright

Sunday, September 9, 2007

As there seems to be more and more creative people attending Penn, Ty Furman, Director of the Platt Student Performing Arts House emailed me to let me know that this year Penn started a new pre-orientation program in the arts called PENNarts.

Per Ty, "31 Freshmen came to Penn 4 days early and took master classes in music, theatre and print making, took a mural arts tour in Philadelphia, saw a fringe show, had panels with arts faculty, administrators and students and closed their time with their own showcase in the Platt Student Performing Arts House."

Lots of talent here. The big question will be...which groups will these freshmen join? Quadramics? Glee Club? Mask and Wig? Off the Beat? Penn Singers? Penn Band? ...Keep us posted!

What is past is present...and future

Same bridge, different years, same deal.

I saw a photo from a facebook Penn friend of mine of the Freshmen Convocation 2007 ceremony and realized how often I've seen this same photo.

We've all seen this same photo.

The people have changed, but the traditions continue as we all celebrate, remember and rejoice in these undergrad milestones.

Take a look at a few shots after the jump (click the "Read More" link below) which define the lifecycle from undergrad to grad:

"That's a nice name tag": The freshman get to know one another

Saturday, September 1, 2007

"Oh, which part of Long Island are you from?"

These are the types of questions that will be buzzing around campus this week.

So I found this improv-type video online for the freshman's "NSO" (New Student Orientation)...which led me to think back to my own experiences as a freshman and two tips (for better or worse) which I may be able to impart to the class of 2011 for this week of "integration".

REMEMBERING NAMES

>When I went to school in the mid 90's, apparently I was one of a few who had a hologram of a "P" on my Penn card. I asked others whose name I had forgotten if I could see their Penn card to see if they too had that crazy P hologram on their card. Soon enough I remembered "Stacy''s name.

>When I rushed, I brought my friend Lauren to some of the earlier events and had her introduce herself first to the brothers. Once the brothers then mentioned their name to her, I suddenly remembered "Jon" and "Jason's" names.

Again, these are for better or worse.

Okay, worse.

What were some of your stories for getting to know people during that first freshman week? Click to comment below!

Dorm rooms are like Facebook Profile pages...

More move-in photos have surfaced on facebook. ...This set from Sydney Fenkell (C'11).

Looking at her photos and other undergrad photos, I realized decorating your first dorm room is like decorating your facebook/myspace/friendster profile pages.

It's all about you.

Like your profile pages, your dorm room should display your friends, showcase lots of colors and (hopefully) contain a few "hugs" and "pokes" here and there.

Come on you creative quakers out there, how else are dorm rooms like social networking profile pages? Comment below!

Class of 2011 move-in continues!...and so do the memories!

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Another bunch of move-in photos finds its way onto facebook. This round from Michael Tomback (C'11), new resident of Hill House.

It's interesting to note how the class of 2011 is already so well connected. Over the summer I've noticed that these now freshman had already made facebook friends (in the hundreds!) with their new Penn classmates without even meeting them. In this evolving technology age, over this past week, it very reminiscent to see most of this class' facebook "status" messages echoing sentiments of sadness and anticipation for their new lives awaiting them in Philadelphia.
