You're Never Going to Guess What Good Grades Earned You from Wharton in 1929!

Thursday, September 3, 2009

Over the past 2 years, I have done many Now and Then Thursday posts and videos comparing my experiences at Penn with what's going on at Penn today.

I'm now going to take "Now and Then Thursdays" to the next level thanks to Joan Myerson Shrager (College for Women, School of Education, '60).

Not only has digital artist extraordinaire Joan emailed me to let me know that her family is now 3 generations at Penn (Joan; her parents Ruth Leone Meyers Myerson (College for Women, '30) and  Adolph Myerson (Wharton '29); and Joan's son Steven Gold (C'85)  ...but she has shared with me exclusive photos and stories passed down to her of what Penn was like when her parents went.

Over the next several months, I will be sharing with you these stories, and I'm sure you'll find these stories as fascinating as I have!

Before we get to the stories from Joan's parents, get a glimpse of what Penn was like in Joan's time.  Per Joan:
"I have my 1960 yearbook and if I felt like counting I would bet over 3/4 of the book is male oriented with some women interspersed and a few pages about Miss Penn and the sororities. In my day, as they say, women could not eat in Houston Hall. Maybe you [DT] could invite some memories from us old timers about our favorite places like Paganos for pizza and Horn and Hardart's. We used the old Furness building as our library and sat in the stacks to do research. Imagine that. No Google, just microfiche that you could hardly read. Oh my............"

Now, to start things off, click HERE to find out what good grades from Wharton earned Joan's father in 1928!  You'll be amazed and jealous to find out that THIS really existed!

That's right, Joan's father's excellent grades earned him "permission to cut class", no penalties!

Per Joan:
"Imagine graduating from Wharton in 1929 --the Great Depression!  He completed 2 years at Law School but had to quit due to no money.  He was able to get a job as a teacher and then got a masters in Ed at Penn in 1932)"

If any alumni have photos or videos of "how Penn was" that you want to share, get in touch with me at merosler at gmail.com.

Friday Fun: Lots of Crazy Stunts Going on Around Campus (VIDEOS)

Friday, July 24, 2009

Crazy in the fact that you wouldn't be catching me doing them.

Check out this fun quick video above of a guy skateboarding right outside Furness.  (Incidentally this was the same exact area I made my escape to after I was caught photographing Tom Hanks in Furness while they were filming Philadelphia.)

This video also reminds me of other DT video favorites of...
  • And this guy unbelievably flipping around all over campus! (another must see!)

Now and Then Thursdays: Busted In Front of Tom Hanks

Philadelphia DVDThe other day I wrote a post about a big sci-fi film that will be shot on Penn's campus this summer.

An alum by the name of "Dara" then made the following comment (which by the way is an entry into our May Contest*) and mentioned:
"I remember when Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington shot the library scene of "Philadelphia" at Furness. I walked to the library with a friend very early one morning to try to catch the stars, but no such luck!"
I too (Matt Rosler, C'96) was actually on campus for the filming of Philadelphia during early January 1993 for Mask and Wig's Spring Show rehearsals. I managed to sneak in while they were filming and got into a bit of trouble...

Read more about it here!

UPennI remember one night a bunch of us Mask and Wiggers snuck into Furness and went up to the balcony area looking down to where they were shooting. I saw Tom Hanks sitting at one of the tables in Furness. I think he was wearing one of those soon to be popular red and blue Penn felt hats (see image to left). At the time I had my big EOS Rebel Camera with the 300mm telephoto lens and attempted to shoot a picture without a flash.

To this day, I remember the moment after I shot that photo I heard a walkie talkie go off saying "Get that kid's camera". I panicked and some assistant approached me and demanded I remove the film. I think I had convinced her not to make me remove the film and somehow my friends and I raced out of Furness through some emergency fire door.

Tom Hanks The next day I went to develop (yep, I said develop) the photo, and to my dismay the photo didn't come out because it was too dark. But the memory lives in my head!

(*FYI, Dara needs to make sure to leave her last name and email address on her comment if she wants an entry to this month's contest!)
