"Most reality shows have people looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Reality Hell will have people wanting to give their's back! The reality genre has all but taken over television programming, making stars out of regular people. Now E! is turning the tables on all those reality-star wannabes by staging a show where the whole cast is in on an act to set up one unknowing reality-show contestant. Staged scenarios include an over-the-top modeling competition with extreme challenges, wacky contestants and insane judges and a family swap that will have the mom trying to find a way to escape the crazy Hollywood clan she's been placed with. This summer on E!, Fake is the new Reality!"I've watched this show and the part I look forward to is the end of the show at the moment when the actors tell the victim they're on "Reality Hell" and the person that is being pranked doesn't know what "Reality Hell" means until they realize all the actors are laughing at them. It's briliant!

Elizabeth Banks (C'96) to star with Russell Crow in Next Three Days According to The Hollywood Reporter, Liz "will play the lead role of Laura, a woman who is imprisoned for a murder she claims she didn't commit, as her husband, the recently cast Russell Crowe, desperately tries to vindicate her."
I will tell you I recently saw Liz in the thriller The Uninvited. Liz definitely plays evil real good... in that she creeped me out real good. She reminded me of Rebecca De Mornay in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.

Okay, while this isn't necessarily a "Penn Foodie" related post, musician Gabriel Mann (C'95, Off the Beat), is holding a spoon in the video above and tells us he and his band The Rescues are serving up some quality rock and roll music. Good enough.
I briefly interrupt our Foodie series this week because I wanted to post this so all of you on the east coast are aware that Gabe and his band The Rescues are touring the east coast this week. And if you remember from my DT posts, Gabe's band's infectiously addicting music has been featured on "Grey's Anatomy" three times this past year!
If you're in Philly, note below that they're playing at the World Cafe Live this Thursday night (8/20)!

He's Obama's "Voice of Reason" in this Jib Jab Viral Video

If you recall, last year Gabriel Mann (C'95, Off the Beat) was the voice of Obama in Jib Jab's "Time for Some Campaigning." In this new Jib Jab video, Gabe is now the "voice of reason" at the beginning of the piece (the first 20 seconds of the clip).

30 Hot Girls Are Lip Syncing to this Penn Musician's Song

Sheri Miller (C'99, English/Poetry Major) just released her new music video for her song "Waste My Breath", featuring 30 girls lip-syncing lyrics to the song. It was filmed in NYC on Prince Street in Soho and South Street Seaport. Sheri is the one on guitar.
Sheri has got a great voice! She's like Sheryl Crow meets KT Tunstall meets Fiona Apple. Check it out in the video above!
Sheri's road in music started as an undergrad at Penn. While still an English Major undergrad, singing in a local blues bands and writing songs secretly in her bedroom, an incredible coincidence happened to Sheri. She began dreaming of a Casio Keyboard over many months, to help her write songs in her bedroom, instead of walking 20 minutes to the jazz piano practice room downtown. One dreamy Sunday morning, after an especially vivid keyboard dream, Sheri took an alternate scenic path to the library, down Locust Walk, instead of her usual straight path on Walnut Street. She passed by a 1-day church sale. To her amazement, she saw and bought the exact same buzzing Casio keyboard she had dreamt of the night before, for $20. This “gentle push” and “tiny miracle” naturally opened Sheri to writing songs on her new keyboard everyday, awakening her artistry.
Sheri further polished her artistry and songwriting voice by playing famous venues in New York, Nashville and LA like Rockwood Music Hall, The Canal Room, Joe’s Pub, Bowery Ballroom, Bluebird Café, World Café Live, and Hotel Cafe.
Upon releasing her critically-acclaimed debut EP, "Mantra", Sheri was asked to join a 4-part vocal harmony group, which signed to Sony Records in Nashville. Since leaving the group, Sheri has opened a sold-out show for Shawn Mullins, headlined a show at The Canal Room, wrote with legendary writer J.D. Souther of The Eagles, Marcus Hummon, Kim Richey, Lauren Christy of The Matrix, as well as other Grammy-Award winning songwriters. Sheri is now deep in the process of writing of songs for her next full-length record.

Is this Penn Undergrad the Next John Legend? (VIDEO)

While he's still an undergrad, Malik Smith (C'10) is a musician we should all be looking out for. With his new single “Crazy” from his debut EP, "Before Dawn", already becoming a fan favorite on Reverbnation and drawing comparisons to last summer’s smash hit “Closer” by Ne-Yo; Malik is only a brush stroke away from success.

He Beatboxes In The Internet Symphony That Went Around The World (VIDEO)

On this happy Cinco de Mayo day, I have a fun, music filled, Penn related, celebration treat for all of you...Did you catch the Youtube Symphony project that was going around the web a couple of weeks ago?
If you watch closely in the video above, at minute 4:07, you would have found Adam Matta (C'96, Mask and Wig) beatboxing the "brake drum and snare" parts in the Mashup Video.
Adam has gone international with his beatboxing recently:
- He headlined the Human Beatbox Convention in London, at the Southbank Centre.
- Was in Austria the same week, rehearsing with Nihan Devecioglu, who will be a guest artist at the show at BAM Cafe in June. More info about the BAM gig HERE

- "Break Me Out" will be heard in episode 19 (season 5), which airs this Thursday April 23rd at 9pm (TONIGHT) and will be the 3rd appearance of Rescues music on the show already this season. (the song is featured in minute 39:54 at abc.com)
- Next week, on Thursday April 30th, the show will debut the Rescues’ song "Stay Over" from the upcoming album "Let Loose The Horses." (the song is featured in minute 19:45 at abc.com)

These 2 Penn Alumni Interview John Legend

In light of his new recently released Evolver album, John Legend (C'99, Counterparts) was interviewed by 2 different Penn alumni for 2 different mediums.Last week, Penn alum and WPIX Entertainment Reporter Emily Frances interviewed John (see video above). Emily filled me in on some John Legend tidbits that I didn't know:
- Legend is a musical prodigy.
- He started playing the piano at the age of 4 and he started attending the University of Pennsylvania when he was only 16-years-old.
- To fit in with the college crowd, he joined an acapella group (Counterparts).
- Legend was the first in his family to attend college and after he graduated, he worked at Boston Consulting Group for 3 years in NY while he was trying to make it.
- He was an English major and lived in Butcher his freshman year.

Did you hear Gabriel Mann (C'95, Off the Beat) and his group The Rescues acoustic version of their song "Crazy Ever After" on last Thursday night's 2 hour season premiere of Grey's Anatomy?His song was placed in the most emotionally pivotal scene of the show (pertaining to whether a patient's memory comes back.) Warning, if you haven't seen the episode yet, this scene is a spoiler.
