Scott Baio
From the Penn alum who brought you "The Murray Hill Song" and "I Miss Moranis", DJ Lubel (C'05) has now created a, dare I say, very funny, and very well produced (thanks to Jake Avnet (C'05)) viral video so very NSFW (that's "Not-Safe-For-Work") that I need to have you click the "continue reading" link below to watch this video!

UPenn Videos

Check out these videos below that I found online from the TV show "A Different World".   In this episode, check out how Penn is featured!
(Video 1: at 8:40)
(Video 2: at 0:40)
(Video 3: at 0:21)
Quick Synopsis:
"Dwayne's old friend Milt comes for a visit. He believes that Hillman is holding Dwayne back, and encourages him to transfer to the University of Pennsylvania. Milt also recommends that Dwayne distance himself from "dead weight" like Ron. Dwayne considers his friend's words, until a talk with Whitley helps remind him of Ron's good qualities and the feeling of family that Hillman holds for its students. He defends the school's academic reputation to Milt. Col. Taylor and Mr. Gaines attend a reunion for U.S. servicemen. Col. Taylor tries to start a romance with a member of his old unit, only to discover that she is a complete mess."
Isn't it amazing how far sitcoms have come this day and age?!

...And watch THIS clip from another show that mentioned Penn last year!

GoldFellas: GoodFellas Meets Goldman Sachs In His New Viral Video

Friday, August 28, 2009

GoodfellasOf the success of his past viral video hit "I'm the Kind of Guy You Meet at 4am", Matt Rittberg (Penn Law 2005) has now come up with a funny spoof based on Goldman Sachs outrageous compensation and Wall Street excess.

Earlier this year, Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman's CEO, sent out a memo telling his top employees not to buy anything flashy with their bonuses. Matt's video above is a parody of the scene in Goodfellas after the heist where De Niro tells his mob guys the same thing! Is Goldman stealing from the American public?

Watch this video and decide for yourself!

Alex Petrovitch and Heinz KetchupHeinz Ketchup

In wrapping up our "Penn Foodies" series for this week, today is all about fun food related videos.

Earlier today I posted two videos about a Penn alum being hired to impersonate Emeril Legasse.

Now I want to share with you two randomly and separately received submissions from Alex Petrovitch (C'01) and Matt Russak (SEAS '03) for the Heinz "Take 2" commercial competition last year.  While neither of them won, these are both very entertaining!

Videos after the jump...

Alex Petrovitch (C'01) in "It's What's Inside"
Dad is left alone with his crying baby- See how he cheers him up!

Matt Russak (SEAS '03, in blue shirt and tie) in "Superglue"
Tale of buffoonery between Mike and Will involving superglue and ketchup at the office.  Note the "The Office" parody of this commercial.  Matt does a good Jim, no?

On a related note, Alex tells me he has booked an appearance on the upcoming season of "24". Check out THIS Penn alum who appeared on "24" last year!

He's Trying To Turn These RedNecks "Gay By Dawn" (VIDEO)

Friday, August 7, 2009

UPenn Gay By DawnLast week I did a post on Hollywood-guy-to-watch-out-for Jonathan London (C'01, WQHS Radio, The Hollywood Club).  And now a fun follow-up!

In that post, Jonathan talked about how he "shot a film for school called Gay By Dawn (featured in Pennfest 2006 - program HERE, photos HERE).  It was a comedy horror short and it played really well at festivals for about two years. I knew it played well with festival audiences because it was weird, but just kept sending it to any festival that would take it and was shocked that it lived so long."

Well, we have it now to show on DT and it is funny!
Synopsis:
"In the deep, dark woods, four rednecks tell ghost stories around an open fire. But when one tells a tale about the horrors that may lurk around them, fear becomes suspicion. Will they make it out in time? Or will the very woods around them turn them Gay By Dawn? Finally! Gay By Dawn is here! Four rednecks discover the true nature of terror in this multiple award winning comedy short."

UPenn and Films

Those who succeed in Hollywood, are those that are in it for the long haul.

Case in point: Jonathan London (C'01, WQHS Radio, The Hollywood Club)

After film school, Jonathan stuck to his guns, got to know the right people and created really well produced films you'll want to see. Pay attention to this guy Hollywood alumni...he's doing some really good films...

CLICK HERE to learn how did Jonathan got his start, what led to his success and watch two professionally produced short films of his you will love. (hint: if you love stories having to do with being single and/or love Ninja comedies, then you'll love these!)

How did Jonathan get his start?

Per Jonathan,
"After graduating from Penn in 2001 I entered the Film MFA program at Columbia. I had been accepted to Columbia and USC but ultimately chose Columbia for their approach to self-financing your film, the faculty they had on staff and their support for owning your own film. I was a fan of the directors coming out of the school and I don't think other schools could compete with recent grads like James Mangold, Kimberley Pierce and Greg Mottola (to name a few). A lot of other schools had more storied reputations but I was excited for what was currently going on at the school.

I left in 2003, moved to L.A. and shot a film for school called Gay By Dawn (featured in Pennfest 2006 - program HERE, photos HERE). It was a comedy horror short and it played really well at festivals for about two years. I knew it played well with festival audiences because it was weird, but just kept sending it to any festival that would take it and was shocked that it lived so long.

At the same time, I was working as a PA runner for a few different film companies. One of the companies was Fox Television Studios and I made friends with the assistants and gave them copies of my movie. About two years after THAT, the assistants had moved up the ranks and were now executives and needed to bring in projects of their own to develop. Luckily, any DVD that reads "Gay By Dawn" in big letters really stands out on a shelf so I got some calls and pitched my series ideas.

The one that really struck a chord was "Singledom", which I think is pretty relatable for people a few years out of college who are lost in the post-grad limbo.

I wrote and directed a presentation for "Singledom" and while that went through sales pitches and further development the studio asked me to take a look at a project they had called "When Ninjas Attack". My geeky enthusiasm and ridiculous knowledge of old ninja and kung fu movies made it a pretty good fit and a few weeks later the scripts were written and I was directing the six episodes that are being released this summer."

Stay tuned this fall when DT announces another big endeavor Jonathan has been working on!

HOT TIP!: Get some of Jonathan's great tips HERE and learn about a great free screenwriting tool he's using that I didn't even know about until he mentioned it!

This Self-Admitted Scumbag is "The Kinda Guy You Meet at 4am" (VIDEO)

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

I've got a cautionary tale to share from lawyer turned stand-up comedian Matt Rittberg (Penn Law 2005) about the guys a girl meets if she stays out too late.

Last spring, I wrote a post about Matt's now he has just debuted his first musical comedy video called "I'm the Kinda Guy" and it is funny! So funny in fact that I decided not to wait to publish this for my Funny Friday series.  And watch this video through til the end to learn about the other kinda guy you girls out there can also meet!

So what was the inspiration for this video?

Per Matt,
"A lot of my standup focuses on relationships and the ridiculous things guys say to try to get girls when they are trying to hook up (ex- the line about having an extra pair of gym shorts and the "no jeans" in the bed rule is something everyone who is single has said or heard before). Also, I lived in the Meatpacking district in NY, and I always see drunken girls stumbling out of bars at 4 am and random creepy guys hitting on them on the streets at hot dog stands etc. Watching those interactions (and occasionally partaking in them) inspired the song. More than anything, I hope it doesn't come off as misogynistic...after all, I'm warning girls and probably breaking some sort of guy code by giving away some of our dirty tricks!"

Since my last post about Matt, he actually quit his job as a lawyer to pursue comedy and is writing full time now.  He's moving to LA in September to seek representation and chase the dream!

If you like irreverent, funny videos like Matt's, you'll also love the videos Penn alumni Aaron Karo (W'01), and DJ Lubel (C'05) have produced!

From Scooby Doo to Family Guy to South Park to the Simpsons, His 66 Impersonations are Spot On! (VIDEO)

Friday, July 17, 2009

What happens when you graduate from Penn and have a little too much time on your hands?

Ask Adam El Sehamy (C'09, Pennchants) who is currently studying for the MCAT and has created this very entertaining video of him doing over 6 minutes(!) of cartoon voiceover impersonations....and they are spot on

And if you remember, we already know how good he's been at characters when he took on the role of THIS superhero.

Check out the video above, and per Adam, ...see which impression he is "pretty sure going to hell for"

UPennNote to Los Angelino Penn alumni, while Adam plans on applying to medical school next year, and is in Philly right now doing a year of post bac work to boost his credentials, he has a year off after that.  He hopes to go to LA and express his creative side (singing, modeling, cartoon voiceovers). "Then if I completely fail, " says Adam, "I always have med school to fall back on and at least I can say I tried."

Perhaps Adam can follow in the footsteps of Doctor and actor Roy Vongtama (C'96)?

The Humor in Being an LA Actor (VIDEO)

Friday, June 26, 2009

What does it mean to be an actor in Los Angeles?

Perhaps boasting about your training ....or exhibiting the extremes to which actors will go to "bring it".

Check out the above very funny "Office"/documentary-ish video on what it means to be an LA actor. In this short, a documentary crew follows around a group of LA actors (co-starring Penn alum Jill Magilone C'00) trying to rehearse for an Industry Showcase. Things get out of control when Ben and Renee show their true colors...

Jill is great in this. Her tone reminds me of a cross between Anna Faris and Julie Hagerty (from Airplane! fame). Very castable!

(Be sure to check out the Joaquin Phoenix reference in there...or at least I think it's a reference as the guy looks like him!)

Their Brilliant Mockumentary: "Dungeons and Dragons" Meets "Waiting for Guffman"

Friday, May 29, 2009

A bunch of Penn undergrads including some of the talented actors from Penn's improv group Without a Net as well as some Drexel improv group students partnered together to create Wizards of West Philly, a mockumentary that can be best described as Dungeons and Dragons meets the TV stylings of "The Office" and/or the film Waiting for Guffman.

Although instead of Dungeons and Dragons, this very well done short is about the followers of another (apparently) popular game called "Magic".  Producer Dave Farber (C'11) describes the game to me as "a newer generation thing, though there are adults (some as old as 40 we found) who play the game."

Per Wikipdeia, Magic can be described as
"Magic: The Gathering is a collectible card game created by a UPenn Mathematics Graduate Student named Richard Garfield and introduced in 1993. It is loosely based on the game Dungeons and Dragons, where each player is a wizard who utilizes the magical spells, items, and fantastic creatures depicted on individual Magic cards to defeat their opponents. The game is intended for a younger audience, but has a large following among young (and not so young) adults. There are Magic grand prixs and tournaments in the U.S. much akin to Poker tournaments where players compete for cash prizes. In 2006, over $3 million was doled out in Magic tournaments across the U.S.
Watch the video above...it really is well produced!   And is it me or does Anthony Levy (C'11) remind you of Saturday Night Live's Bill Hader?
Penn actors:
Anthony Levy (C'11), Molly Mitchell (C'11), Joe Lawless (C'12), Lucy Wolf (C'12),

Drexel's actors:
Jake Beckerman - Drexel '09, Luke Giordano - Drexel '09

The crew that worked on it were from Prof. Ellen Reynolds Video 1 class:
Dave Farber (C'09), Tom Fang (W'10), Aliza Fischer (C'09), Jason Rasmussen (W'12), Kirstin Snyder (W'12)

Our Alum Film Producer Shows Us A New Side of Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds and Betty White (VIDEO)

Friday, May 22, 2009

Executive Film producer Todd Lieberman (C'95, Mask and Wig, AEPi) just released this new very funny viral video to help promote his upcoming film The Proposal, which debuts June 19.

While Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are very funny in this video, it's the very naughty Betty White who steals the show. Check out the video above to see what I'm talking about!

Todd tells me that "The thing that surprises me most about this movie is not the amount of laughs that are in it but how emotional is plays. It truly is one of those movies where you laugh...and you cry."

One of These Mashup Winners Has the Muppets Talking About Orgasms (MUST-SEE VIDEOS)

Friday, May 8, 2009

Over the past month the Weigle library at Penn had its annual Mashup Contest which celebrates student creativity with video and multimedia.

Check out the top 4 winners above. These are all great, but there's just something VERY funny about our second place winner's video about the muppets talking about the big "O".:

  • Video + Poem + Painting (1st place winner)
    by William Strasser
"Whether in Classical mythology, Renaissance painting, 20th century poetry or modern music videos, depictions of suffering have never ceased to captivate audiences. I aim to juxtapose these depictions in order to highlight ways they have changed and ways that they remain the same, identifying something inherent to the human condition.

  • The Muppets Take "Manhattan" (2nd place winner)
    by Aaron Walker
"I'm trying to show that puppets can be lewd AND funny - unlike Avenue Q. Here I've spliced the audio from Woody Allen's "Manhattan" over video from "The Muppets take Manhattan". "

  • No Way Out of the Field of Dreams (3rd place winner)
    by Allison Seelig
"I am trying to show how baseball serves an important mythic function for the nation by making it into a national security issue obsessed over by the government.

  • Slumdog Millionaire 2 (People's Choice Award-determined by online voting)
by Akash Barot with Adam El Sehamy and Zhibo Wang
"If you thought Slumdog Millionare was the last great Bollywood movie, you would be mistaken. Get ready for the sequel!

The 2009 Contest was sponsored by Penn Libraries, the Penn Humanities Forum, the Cinema Studies Program, and College Houses and Academic Services. The 2009 Video Mashup Contest award ceremony was held on April 30, 2009.

If You Grew Up in New York and/or Went to Penn, You'll LOVE His Musical Short

Friday, April 10, 2009

If you grew up in New York you'll love this video.
If you know someone from New York, you'll love this video.
If you went to Penn, you'll probably love this video.

What is it?

It's the latest short comedy musical from DJ Lubel (C'05) and it's all about New York (Murray Hill to be exact) and his circle of hebrew school graduated, sleepaway camp and teen tour loving friends. Not only is it clever, but it's well directed and produced.

If you recall, DJ did a FANTASTIC comedy musical on how much he misses Rick Moranis! Check it our HERE!

The Truth About Twitter

Friday, March 20, 2009

Over the past couple of months the whole notion of Twitter has really blown up and between Twitter and Facebook, everyone can basically communicate to everyone else instantly what they're doing or thinking at that moment.

Personally, I've only been using my Twitter page to communicate the latest Penn news and occasionally my opinions about some TV shows... but I'm (gulp) beginning to see the addicting quality to it. In the near future, I'll probably also use Twitter to share some cool, useful (not necessarily Penn related) and free tech sites and products on the web.

I think the video above really and hysterically nails this Twitter revolution down PERFECTLY!

...My favorite lines used as tweet examples in the above video:
  • "I'm watching TV with my cat" and
  • "Just found a parking space"
What do you think?  Comment below and leave your twitter address for others to follow!
