Alumni Make History with Viral Videos

Monday, November 3, 2008

Two weeks ago I wrote a post about how Executive producers Todd Shotz (C'96) and Andrew Oldershaw (C'02), as well as writer/director Dan Kay (C'97) created four very viral "No on Prop 8" viral videos.

This past week, in a first for an American political campaign, the NO on Prop 8 campaign paid to air the clever video you see above - which was originally produced just for the web by our Penn alumni supporters.

So far, this video has aired during Jimmy Kimmel, Daily Show, Colbert Report, and Saturday Night Live.

Be sure to go out and vote tomorrow everyone!

Three Alumni Go Viral with "No on Prop 8" Celebrity Videos

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

On November 4th, Californians will be asked to make a monumental civil rights decision around the issue of same-sex marriage.

Last week, three Los Angeles based Penn alumni decided to take action against this Proposition 8.  Executive producers Todd Shotz (C'96) and Andrew Oldershaw (C'02), as well as writer/director  Dan Kay (C'97) created four very viral PSAs against this proposition including the talents of Margaret Cho and Molly Ringwald.  FYI, Dan Kay wrote and directed the one with Margaret Cho (see above).

Since they debuted these videos, they have gotten over a million hits on Perez Hilton, Huffington Post, People.com, and E! Online. Yesterday, Wolf Blitzer showed one of them on CNN. Because of the response, they're already deep into pre-production on more.

Per Todd, "We could not have hoped for more coverage to add our support to this campaign. Enjoy! And of course, please vote NO on Prop 8."

Kate Walsh

Kate Walsh (Addison on Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice) came to Penn on Saturday (9/13/08) to talk at a PennDems meeting.

Click here to watch her talk about the Obama campaign, the first time she met Barack and what he said to her that impressed her, ...and a funny clip where we see the effects of the red-eye flight she took to get to Penn!
(thanks to youtube's "EmmyWatches")

Kate Walsh talks about Nevada, the Obama campaign, her mom, her mom's hat:

Kate Walsh discusses the Obama campaign, gets confused, and then bounces back:

Did you see John Legend (C'99, Counterparts) perform his hit song  "Yes We Can" with will.i.am at last night's Democratic National Convention?   Check it out in the moving video above!

On that note, as you may recall, John debuted this song at Penn when he rallied on campus for Obama back in April. Watch this great video here!

It's clear that John is getting some serious national exposure these days with his involvement in this campaign.  If you didn't see, John also did an interview yesterday with Paul Williams on MSNBC at the Democratic National Convention. Music Mondays: This Hip-Hop Artist Wants Change

Monday, April 21, 2008

UPenn

UPennI recently discovered a new Penn talent in the world of hip hop. He’s opened up for various world-wide and local icons such as Ludacris, The Pack, Yukmouth, Frontline, and many more.

…And he’s an undergrad.

I’ll be honest, I don’t follow Hip-Hop too much, but when I heard Etan Fraser’s (C’11) music, I became a fan.

This past week, Etan put out a music video with his girlfriend Stephanie McIntyre (C’11) encouraging change through a vote for Obama. This is some good inspirational music if you ask me.

videosWatch his video here

Per Etan, the heart of his work “shines through the lyrical content of my music, which is richly diverse in content in regards to emotion, subject matter, and lively performance-based songs”.

Etan's start in Hip-Hop and the great opportunities he had at an early age

On a related "political" note,

John Legend Debuts Obama Rally Song At Penn!

Monday, April 14, 2008

John LegendJohn Legend (C'99, Counterparts) was on campus at an Obama rally performing his new song "If You're Out There". Apparently, this is a new song he wrote last week for the Obama campaign because he was inspired by the young people out there getting involved with the election. A pretty appropriate rally song if you ask me.

Check out some of the other songs he performed:

video"Take It Slow"

video"Get Lifted"

video"Ordinary People"

video"Good Morning"

It's always fun when celebrities come to campus to endorse candidates. ...Like when these celebrities came to Penn back in 1993 to support Bill Clinton.

videoSpeaking of John Legend, catch an appearance John made on the Ellen Show a couple months ago!

Website Wednesdays: His Colorful Crayon

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

From Scott Shrake's (GSAS'96) Huffington Post blog, to Rachel Goldberg's (C'96) National Protrusion site, it seems like our alumni have much to say about today's political climate.

Al BinghamAnd now it's time to add another humorous political site from our alumni to the mix: Al Bingham's (C'92, Mask and Wig, Philomathean Socitey, Friars) The Purple Crayon.

Per Al, this site is all about "political humor that makes no distinction between Red State or Blue. The pen may be mightier than the sword but The Purple Crayon is more colorful."

Some highlights of his site include:

Apparently other media sources are reading Al's blog. Per Al,

"I think the NYTimes is worth reading, especially the Caucus Blog. Also firstread.msnbc.com. Assuming you're interested in politics, of course. If you're not really interested in politics then you should check out The Huffington Post's humor site 236.com (most of the news, some of the time) ... especially on the days when they're cross-posting libelous material from The Purple Crayon - my political humor blog - albingham.typepad.com. Apparently folks from Politico.com, CNN, MSNBC and a bunch of people in the House and Senate read The Purple Crayon from time to time... which is an indication of how low the media and politicians have sunk in the Stewart-Colbertian sense."
Check out Al's site here

Two Presidents Preside: Gutmann and Clinton

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Today, Penn President Amy Gutmann introduced President Bill Clinton at the “Kerner Plus 40” Symposium in Irvine Auditorium.

Per Penn's press release:

"Sponsored by Penn’s Center for Africana Studies and Annenberg School for Communication and by the Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies at North Carolina A&T University, “Kerner Plus 40” marks the 40th anniversary of the 1968 report issued by the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, known as the Kerner Commission. The Commission was formed to assess the causes of race riots that occurred in U.S. cities during the 1960s. The Commission’s most chilling words came in its assessment that the nation was 'moving toward two societies, one black, one white -- separate and unequal.'"
