Scott Baio
From the Penn alum who brought you "The Murray Hill Song" and "I Miss Moranis", DJ Lubel (C'05) has now created a, dare I say, very funny, and very well produced (thanks to Jake Avnet (C'05)) viral video so very NSFW (that's "Not-Safe-For-Work") that I need to have you click the "continue reading" link below to watch this video!

His New Production Company's Hot New Viral Videos You MUST See!

Jake Avnet and UPenn
I've got another Penn alum filmmaker you all should keep your eye on who produced 2 viral hits I want to share --one a funny commercial for "Trojans2Go" and the other which brilliantly combines a Talking Heads song with the film American Psycho!

Last year, I did a post about how Jake Avnet (C'05, Co-Chairman of Undergraduate Film Advisory Board, Founder of the Lecture Series, "Talking Film") won two prestigious grants for one of his films.  Since then, Jake has co-founded his own production company called ENEMY Incorporated with director David Green whose focus is on commercials, music videos, and viral content, as well as film and television production.

As mentioned above, Jake sent me two great films his company has produced. And they're really creative and well done!

Trojan Condoms
Trojan2Go Commercial -"Sri Lanka": Watch this guy travel the globe in the name of love! (reminds me of my undergrad film).   I'm sure our Penn alum sexologist and Trojan spokesperson would approve!

American Psycho and Tom Cruise and Talking HeadsA semi-NSFW cover of the Talking Heads Song "This Must Be the Place" laid over shot-by-shot re-enactments from American Psycho.  ...Tell me that the star of this video, Miles Fisher (Harvard alum), doesn't look like Tom Cruise?!

He's Won Two Prestigious Grants For His Tasty Short Film

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

More news of Hollywood alumni working together.

Jake Avnet (C'05, Co-Chairman of Undergraduate Film Advisory Board, Founder of the Lecture Series, "Talking Film") produced a short film called LAST MEAL with Penn alum writer Tracy Park (W'05), Micah Fitzerman-Blue (Harvard grad), and director Mark Stern (Princeton grad).

This short film has been the recipient of two very prestigious grants:  the Special Project Grant from the Peter Stark Producing Program at USC, as well as the Panavision New Filmmaker's Grant.  The film stars Fran Kranz (The VillageMatchstick Men, and the upcoming TV series "The Dollhouse"), and Nikki Griffin (Dukes of Hazzard and The Fast and the Furious).

Per Jake,
"Fantasy becomes reality in this action/comedy about a suburban couple that ventures into a diner and find themselves in the middle of a "situation".  A man seeking vengeance for the death of his father has finally tracked down the culprit, the chef and owner of the diner."
Jake and his crew have just recently begun the festival run, and have been accepted into AFI Fest 2008 -- one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. The film will screen in competition at the ArcLight theater in Hollywood, on November 6th and 7th. For more information, please visit the blog: http://lastmeal.wordpress.com

Jake's zest for film production seems to have been passed down from his talented Penn alum director/producer father, Jon Avnet (C'71). Click here for some of my past posts about Jon.

He Wants Hollywood to Know How Much He Misses Rick Moranis

Friday, August 8, 2008

Funny man DJ Lubel (C’05) seems to juggle a whole bunch of creative jobs here in Los Angeles.
  • His day job is working as an Associate Producer on the show fellow Penn alum Roy Bank (C’94) created, Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?.
  • He just finished working as an Associate Producer at "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List" among other jobs.
  • When he’s not writing scripts, he performs original comedic songs all around Los Angeles.
  • He’s had shows at the Whiskey A GO GO, The Pig N the Whistle, El Cid, Cabana Club etc.
In addition, DJ has created a whole bunch of funny viral videos, but his “I Miss Moranis” one in particular has caught the attention of such sites as IMDB, Funnyordie and Spiketv. Last spring, the attention of this video had students at Lindenwood University in St. Charles Missouri fly DJ out to perform at their annual spring fling event!

Right now DJ is working with other fellow Penn alumni including Jake Avnet (C’05), Conor Welch (C’05) and Jason Ziven (W’05) in developing future projects.
