The Gross Clinic

This year instead of reading books, the Penn Reading Project had incoming freshmen use Thomas Eakins' "The Gross Clinic" as a visual text as a means to "introduce students from the start to the critical skill of interpreting visual material."

Below you will find a video lecture of Dr. Kathleen Foster and Dr. David B. Brownlee discussing "The Gross Clinic" and the shock value of Eakins' gory painting.  This lecture is actually really interesting and I encourage all of you to watch this.

Then on a lighter note, David Fox (Director of Academic Initiatives) sent me this very fun music video Penn did called "The Gross Clinic Bounce" which pretty much sums up the painting in some creative rhymes and graphics.   Check it out below!

While Penn's Newest Move Onto Campus, Penn's Oldest Stake Their Territory (VIDEOS)

Friday, September 4, 2009

As you'll see above, yesterday was the start of move-in day for the freshmen at Penn.

Let's also not forget about these other residents of Penn who seem to be the subject/fodder for many Penn videos I've covered HERE over the years...

UPenn BioPond
More summer cleaning to do for my "Delicious Leftovers" week with the following 2 videos I've been hanging onto for quite some time now. (Thanks for hanging in there!  I've got lots of fresh new stories coming up starting tomorrow!)

Here is a short film of the Biopond at Penn.  In all my years during and after Penn, while I knew this existed, I honestly don't think I ever went to this place located behind the Quad(?).  If you're like me, enjoy the following video and get acquainted with what seems to be a very tranquil place:

And here's a 2008 Founder's Day Event showcasing the Phi Delta Theta chapter at Penn. I've passed this fraternity a million times with it's big St Bernard dog, but again, I don't think I ever actually went inside it.  (I think I was too entrenched in the AEPi, ZBT, SAM, and Mask and Wig circles.)   In the video below there are shots of Phi Delt's inside.

This Locust Walk Video Reminds Me of The First Mask and Wig Bit I Ever Starred In

In continuing my "Delicious Leftovers" week, the following 2 videos were submitted by Kiera Reilly (C'93, Director, Alumni Travel, Associate Director, Global Alumni Network) about 2 years ago and somehow they slipped through the cracks.

UPenn's Locust WalkIn the following clip, Phi Kappa Sigma raises money for Leukemia on Locust Walk via a bike "ride-athon".  How many of these "-athons" have we all been a part of in one form or another on Locust Walk?

This actually reminds me of one of the first bits I ever starred in for Mask and Wig when I was a freshman. It was called "Gamma-Lam Read-athon".  The premise of the bit had sorority sisters trying to draw attention to their "readathon" (guy on rocking chair sleeping).  After several "Gamma-Lam Readathon, check it outs" and "any spare change will do", a guy walks by and pulls out his kidney and puts it in the money jar.   The bit ended with "organ donors get no respect".  I realize as I'm writing this that this doesn't exactly translate, but it was funny.

Speaking of Locust Walk, check out this "Fall" nighttime video:

450 Pound Stainless Steel Coffer Buried in Quad - To Be Opened in 2040!

Thursday, August 6, 2009

UPenn Time CapsuleDid you know that there was a Time Capsule buried in the Quad in 1940?

Who knew?!

According to the American Time Capsule Database, the contents of the capsule apparently contain:
  • President Roosevelt's speech at the University of Pennsylvania's bicentennial celebration
  • Letters from each administrative officer of the university to his successor of 100 years hence
Anyone know where in the quad this was buried exactly?

Friday Fun: Lots of Crazy Stunts Going on Around Campus (VIDEOS)

Friday, July 24, 2009

Crazy in the fact that you wouldn't be catching me doing them.

Check out this fun quick video above of a guy skateboarding right outside Furness.  (Incidentally this was the same exact area I made my escape to after I was caught photographing Tom Hanks in Furness while they were filming Philadelphia.)

This video also reminds me of other DT video favorites of...
  • And this guy unbelievably flipping around all over campus! (another must see!)

A Safer Penn?: From The Rape Whistle to the Newly Installed Campus Wide Siren (VIDEOS)

Monday, July 13, 2009

UPenn
Back in my college years, if you had a problem, you could blow your Penn rape whistle or go to one of the blue "call" boxes on campus and dial for help.

Rest assured undergrads, grads and prospects, Penn continues to up their safety measures.

As of this past week, Penn has installed more than a dozen sirens on campus as part of the emergency alert system.  Check out the news report video above to learn more! Also listen to Maureen Rush, Penn's Vice President for Public Safety unveil the Siren Outdoor System, "PennSOS".

Special thanks to Meg from 2birds1blog.com for the Penn rape whistle image above!

Followup: Google Street View Bike Comes to UPenn (THE VIDEO!)

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

The other day I posted some photos of the Google Street View Bike on the Penn campus.  Now check out the newly posted video above to see where the Google bike actually went around the Penn campus.

Kudos to Penn for doing this as it is great for prosectives, current students and alumni to go explore!

Google Street View Bike Snaps Photos on Penn Campus

Monday, June 22, 2009

UPenn
Last week the Google Street View Bike was spotted  on Locust Walk  snapping pictures in front of the Button.

UPenn
The cameras take shots and geo-tags the photos so users can get a street-level view of where they are on Google Maps.  The bikes were created so they could photograph smaller areas that the car can't access (like campus walkways).

No word yet on when these images will come to Google maps.

Thanks to Scott Spitzer (Penn Staff) for the photos! Check out all his work at http://www.scottspitzer.com.

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt Tells Penn Graduates to Turn off Their Computer and Phones (VIDEO)

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

On Monday (May 18), Eric Schmidt, Google chairman and chief executive officer, delivered the 2009 Commencement Address and talked about:
  • his gratitude for Penn for the invention of ENIAC
  • the quality of the Penn interns that work at Google
  • this generation as the Google and Facebook generation
  • how the future will have us walking around with ipods with over 85 years of video storage
  • how success is about being ready for opportunities that come before you
  • how it is important for everyone to turn off your computers and phones and discover all that is human around us
Around minute 6:15, Eric talks about how Penn was struggling 20 years ago.  I am not exactly sure what he is referring to.  Anyone want to chime in on this?

8 Minutes In, the Perfect Storm Hits Penn President Amy Gutmann (VIDEO)

UPenn and Amy GutmannWhile sopping wet rainstorms have drenched previous graduation ceremonies, it was merely a gentle breeze at the 2009 graduation ceremony that caused President Amy Gutmann to become speechless.

Her carefully crafted words of wisdom were blown right from the podium into the air by the unexpected gust of wind on an otherwise beauty of a day. In seconds, the papers flying led to an outburst of cheering and applause instead of her sentence of praise toward the departing class' ability to take risks.

How did she react to the disastrous downdraft?

Just as you'd imagine from the pro we've grown to love as a wise leader and who since 2004 only keeps getting better at embracing simple elegance and sheer grace.  What followed once she won the stadium-packed audience back is just as simple, elegant and wise a message as you'll see in the above video that caught the whole thing first hand.

Two Successful Alumni Authors Back on Campus Tomorrow, Celebrating Their Reunion Weekend

Friday, May 15, 2009

Earlier this week, we saw videos from Laura Mac (C'89) who will be celebrating her 20th reunion this weekend.

Two more alumni of note (authors!) will be back on campus respectively celebrating their 25th and 10th reunions.

  • UPenn and Marie LambaPenn Alum and author Marie (Busterna) Lamba (C'84) will be back on campus this weekend celebrating her 25th reunion, as well as doing a book signing for her young adult novel WHAT I MEANT... this Saturday May 16th from 2-:4:30 pm at the Penn Bookstore (3601 Walnut Street)
WHAT I MEANT, which Publisher’s Weekly has called “an impressive debut,” is set in Doylestown and Philadelphia and is about a 15 year old girl, her mysterious guy, her Indian dad, her American mom, her evil aunt, and tons of drama and laughs.
    UPenn and What I Meant...
Marie says she owes much of who she is today to her time at Penn. “I took tons of writing courses in college, and that, combined with my experiences as a student there, really helped shape me as a writer, and it influenced my novel as well.” The Philadelphia scenes in What I Meant… are drawn from her freshman year at Penn. “My teen character winds up stuck in Philly at night, completely lost and shook up. Kind of like me in my first year of college. I, too, was a small town girl who had a lot to learn about cities and about myself.”
Find out HERE how Marie got her start, got published and her advice to you on becoming an author!
    Marie's website HERE

  • upenn
Rachel Skerritt (C'99, GSE '99) will also be doing a signing and discusion of her book WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN at the Penn Bookstore on Saturday 5/1 at 3:30 pm.

Read my post I did about Rachel HERE and learn how she leads a double life as a high school principal and novelist!

What inspired Rachel to start writing? ...Which famous Penn alumni have been mentors to her? ...And what are her tips to YOU? The answers got me chuckling... Find out more here!

Awaiting Her Reunion Weekend, This Penn Alum Gives Us a Walking Campus Tour Down Memory Lane (VIDEOS)

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

UPenn
As Laura K. Mack (C'89) prepares herself for celebrating her 20th class reunion at this weekend's Reunion Weekend (May 15-17th), she posted some videos (see below) she took from being on campus during last year's (2008) reunion weekend.

If you haven't been back to campus in a bit, Laura takes us for a walking tour down her memory lane as she reminisces about the High Rises, Locust Walk, and the Quad to name a few of her tour stops. She then journeys into some video in the 2008 reunion tents as well.  I thought her video back into Hill House was most interesting as she attempts to visit her freshman dorm room

UPenn Reunion WeekendIt seems like Laura has lots of great memories!  She looks forward to reuniting with her class this weekend! (fyi, Laura has organized a Hill House mini-reunion at the 1989 tent this Saturday at 1 pm)

For more info about this May 15-17th weekend's reunion weekend (it's not too late to register!), click HERE!

And be sure to check out
  • some of DT's 2008 reunion videos in the scroller above from the Class of 1993 reunion tents.
