They're Looking for a Double Date If You're Good Looking and Not Crazy (VLOG)

 
Ethan Fixell (C'04, Off the Beat Music Director, right in photo above) and best friend and comedy partner Dave really like to double date.

They went on their first double date in 7th grade, then one in 10th grade.  Who knew that this would spiral into something, much, much bigger...



In 2008, almost 10 years later, what begun as a double date ad on Craigslist has led to:

• emails from over 1500 pairs of women
• 200 double dates
• a vlog charting their experiences
• a monthly live show at NYC's People's Improv Theater
• and more recently, a national college tour (performances have included shows at Dartmouth, Florida Atlantic University, Boston University, and of course, Penn).

If You Went to SleepAway Camp, You'll Want to Check Out Julie Kraut's New Book

Julie Kraut (C'04, Bloomers)'s new book SLEPT AWAY comes out today and if you went to sleepaway camp, I'm sure you'll relate to/appreciate this.

This is Julie's second book since HOT MESS: SUMMER IN THE CITY and it fits into that "chick lit" category I covered with another Penn alum author HERE.

Check out the synopsis below and note that the camp in her book "Camp TimberTrails" sounds like a conglomerate of camps "Camp Timberlake" and "Trails End"...2 very popular sleepaway camps for Long Islanders like myself..(although I went to Camp Wayne!):

"Laney Parker is a city girl through and through. For her, summertime means stepping out of her itchy gray school uniform and into a season of tanning at rooftop swimming pools, brunching at sidewalk cafes, and—as soon as the parents leave for the Hamptons—partying at her classmates’ apartments.

But this summer Laney’s mother has other plans for Laney. It’s called Camp Timber Trails and rustic doesn’t even begin to describe the un-air-conditioned log cabin nightmare. Laney is way out of her element—the in-crowd is anything but cool, popularity seems to be determined by swimming skills, and the activities seem more like boot camp than summer camp.

Splattered with tie dye fall out, stripped of her cell, and going through Diet Coke withdrawal, Laney is barely hanging on. Being declared the biggest loser of the bunk is one thing, but when she realizes her summer crush is untouchably uncrushable in the real world, she starts to wonder, can camp cool possibly translate to cool cool?

Did you catch the very Penn alumni-filled Apprentice on Sunday night?

Donald Trump (W'68), Ivanka Trump (W'04) and Don Trump Jr. (W'00) were dishing out tasks to the new cast of The Celebrity Apprentice, which included Melissa Rivers (Tabard Founder, C'89).

And although he never made an appearance, Donny Deutsch (C'79) sent someone from his company with a very generous check to buy a single cupcake!

Gabriel Mann's Music Gets Supersized for the Olympics

Penn is being represented in the Olympics in more ways than one.

Yesterday, Susan Francia (C'04) was one of the eight who won the gold in rowing for the United States.

There's also news of another Penn alumnus who has been part of the Olympics stage as well.

If you've been watching the Olympics, chances are you've seen Gabriel Mann's  (C'95, Off the Beat) work...or maybe tivo'd right through it.


Gabe wrote music for a big McDonald's Olympics commercial, which  per Gabe is "the one with the breakfast chicken sandwich and a bunch of olympians talking about how awesome mcdonalds breakfast chicken sandwich is".  Check out in the clip above!

Besides this, Gabe also shared with me that he produced Sara Bareilles' first album, "the one before the big one on the big label".  It's called Careful Confessions, and it's being released by her label.

In my last post about performance artist Carlos Andrés Gómez (C'04), I was pretty much wowed by this alum's passion for expression.

Well he's done it again.

Carlos just posted a video of a recent performance talking about his experiences as a public school teacher in NYC and his adolescent students doing the "distinctly beautiful" exercise.

I'll tell you this, Carlos' words are well-crafted, poignant and shockingly truthful. I definitely get chills listening to what he has to say.

And so will you.

Wharton Family fired up for a new "celebrity" season

Did you catch The Celebrity Apprentice last night?

Wharton alumni Donald Trump (W'68), Ivanka Trump (W'04), and Don Trump Jr. (W'00) are back for a seventh season (Thursdays, 9pm NBC) with a whole new twist where celebrities play to earn money for their charities.

Having been a fan of the show and a former web producer for the Yahoo! Apprentice site, I've got to say from what I can tell, this season is pretty good. Mostly because of the personalities of the attention seeking Omarosa, the somewhat cocky Piers Morgan and the crass Gene Simmons. The best part of the show so far is watching Trump and these "celebrities" (and I'll use that term loosely) interact. While these celebrities will be playing for charity, it will be interesting to see how the season pans out when the stakes to become the winner aren't as personally high to these celebrities as compared to past season's candidates. Also, I do think the show works better back in New York. What do you think?

Per NBC.com, The Celebrity Apprentice has a whole new slant this season:
"Contestants will not be vying for a job with Donald Trump, but the business-savvy celebrity contestants will be working towards a greater goal -- as they raise over a million dollars for their various charities throughout the season. Not only will the final winner be crowned the first 'Celebrity Apprentice,' but he or she will also have the honor of delivering a $250,000 bonus check to their designated charity.

All 14 celebrities will be competing in business-driven tasks around New York City, using their fame along with their proven business acumen to win challenges, while ultimately raising money and awareness for their respective causes.

Just as in the regular "Apprentice," the celebrities will be subjected to long hours, grueling mental challenges, personality clashes, and intense scrutiny -- all without the help of their regular support system of agents, managers, and personal assistants.

Certain tasks encourage the contestants to reach out to their network of celebrity contacts for assistance or donations -- making for entertaining surprise visits by some of the world's biggest stars along the way.

All of the tasks will be judged by Trump and his advisors in the boardroom. Returning back to the boardroom are Trump's children (and colleagues) Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr., alongside longtime Trump Organization employee and "Apprentice" advisor George Ross. In a new twist, the boardroom will feature a "rotating seat," allowing a variety of famous business leaders and industry legends to join Trump in spirited judgment on tasks for the first time in the series."

#4) "Styky Phonebook" Widget
I've seen many people here on Facebook lose their cell phones and post messages to have their friends help them rebuild their phonebook.

With Penn alum Kunal Gupta's (C'04) Styky Phonebook application, you now can use your existing friend network on Facebook to quickly and easily build or rebuild a phonebook. This application puts a form on your profile which lets people give you their number or any number (your choice). This information is then given to you for approval and, once approved, it is added to your Styky phonebook!

Carlos Andrés Gómez (C'04), award-winning NYC poet and actor, has a voice. ...And it's channeled through his passion for the spoken word. After checking out his videos, the best word to describe this guy is captivating!

At Penn, Carlos was the founder of The Excelano Project one of the nation's premier spoken word/performance poetry collectives.

You may have seen him earlier this year on the cover of the February issue of Brass Magazine and on the most recent season of HBO's Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry.

His passion for this art form has opened doors into the acting world as well.

Mikaelyn Austin (C’04) scores with Palestra documentary on ESPN

Writer/Producer Mikaelyn Austin's (C’04, Women's Basketball) feature-length documentary film The Palestra: Cathedral of Basketball, premieres next week on ESPN Classic and ESPN-U.

For those of you who haven't heard about this film, it traces the evolution of college basketball through the rise of one of the most historic basketball arenas in the country. The film traces the storied history of Big 5 basketball at the Palestra and features former Penn players and coaches including: current Penn Athletic Director Steve Bilsky, C’71, David “Corky” Calhoun, C’72, Chuck Daly, and Fran Dunphy.

I met Mikaelyn about 5 years ago when she was first starting this project and it's fantastic to see what such hard work and persistence can do. Congratulations, Mikaelyn!
