He's Producing a Reality Show About a Reality TV School!

Thursday, September 25, 2008

Roy BankGet this...

So there's a "New York Reality TV School" founded by Robert Galinsky to help people actually get ONTO their favorite reality shows.

And President of Merv Griffin Television Roy Bank (C'94) is in final talks to create a reality show out of this.

Per Portfolio.com,
"The series will begin by following him [Galinsky] as he works to expand the school from the fly-by-night operation it now is into an internationally-franchised operation. "We are going to move from a mom and pop shop to a full-blown business," he says.

Like many reality series, it will have an elimination-style format, although Galinsky says he would like to have multiple winners to encourage the formation of alliances. The prizes, he says, will include "both first-look auditions on current shows and a full pilot production produced by Merv Griffin."
And this cracks me up...Galinksy is quoted as calling the show "an uber-meta-circular-clusterfuck of camera seducing camera seducing cast seducing viewer."

I will watch this for sure!

Matt Kap's (C'97) band's (The Moving Picture Show) song "The Boy Who Lives Backwards" is featured in the season premiere of MTV's Road Rules Challenge: The Island. It was played at the end of the show when the cast decided to vote off one of their own. Check your local listings for the show's reairing.

Listen to "The Boy Who Lives Backwards" here:

The story behind the song?   Per Matt:

"The Boy Who Lives Backwards" basically came out of a regret. I was going to take some summer classes at NYU and met a girl the first day in the dorm through a friend. She'd had a bad day and her friend wasn't around so I decided to try and cheer her up. We had a really incredible night but I was so shy at the time and thought she had a boyfriend so I didn't ask her out. Years later I thought of that while singing a melody and began thinking about regrets we have in life - the person we didn't kiss, the bully on the playground we didn't stand up to, the clever comebacks that we wished we'd said in an argument and that's what the song is about. It also really reminds me of New York City in the fall which is my favorite time of year."

Pennalicious Profile: You'll Want To Tune Into His Next Show

          Thursday, April 24, 2008

Roy BankOver the past few days, we've been talking about Roy Bank (C'94), reality head honcho over at Mark Burnett Productions and now President of Merv Griffin Television.

I have mentioned that Roy oversaw such Mark Burnett shows as Apprentice, Survivor, RockStar and Contender...

Before Roy left, he not only created and executive produced Are You Smarter that a 5th Grader?, but he also produced another clever reality show that's sure to be a hit that comes out this summer on CBS.

          More on the show here!

Read Part 1: "He's Way Smarter Than a Fifth Grader"
Read Part 2: "He's Now Running This TV Empire"
Read Part 3: "His Hollywood Beginnings and His Biggest Piece of Advice"

Roy's next show, Jingles, will have contestants concocting commercial jingles for real products.

          Per RealityTVWorld.com:
"Each one-hour episode of the tentatively-titled series will follow a team of contestants who are given weekly advertisement-writing assignments before having to perform the catchy campaign they created. The products they're pitching could include anything from food or toys to a sports' team fight song or TV show theme. In addition to having to impress a panel of yet-to-be-announced judges and the studio audience, the contestants will also have to wow home viewers -- who will vote for their favorite following each broadcast to determine a weekly winner."
Clever and potentially cringe-worthy music WITH product placement?! I'll be watching for sure!

Roy's got some other shows coming soon but too early to talk about. But from what I've heard, these too are going to be some great programs!

Pennalicious Profiles: He's Way Smarter Than a Fifth Grader

          Monday, April 21, 2008

If you're a fan of reality TV, you'll be happy to know that there's a Penn alum behind some of the biggest reality shows out there.

For the past 3 years Roy Bank (C'94, Intramural Football) took charge as the head of Development and Operations for Mark Burnett Productions, one of the most recognized television production companies in the world, overseeing such shows as Apprentice, Survivor, RockStar and Contender. Roy is widely known to have been the major force behind the enormous success of Hollywood’s top reality TV company.

UPennIf that isn't impressive enough, Roy is also Creator and Executive Producer of Are You Smarter that a 5th Grader? It would seem everything he puts his mind to turns to gold.

I met Roy working on a mutual project with Mark Burnett Productions producing the Yahoo websites for seasons 2-6 of the Apprentice, The Contender and then a game-a-day promotional project for the Flushed Away movie. Roy’s zest for expanding traditional TV and film into new media lit up a new road for leveraging a content down multiple paths.

All eyes are on this guy to see what’s next. DT knows and is about to share with you how your fellow Penn alum broke through the thousands of wanna’-be players and is on a rise to the top of one of most difficult industries – show biz.

Stay tuned this week to find out what HUGE company he's heading up now and what new projects are on the horizon!
