Hill Country Restaurant and New York CityTo kick things off for my Penn Foodies series, here's a great inspirational story about one Penn alum entrepreneur who went from the telecom world to tremendous success in the restaurant world.

After working in the telecom world for a number of years (Centric Telecom, eLink Communications), Marc Glosserman (C'96, Sigma Chi) went on to earn his MBA from Columbia University where he won seed funding for his first restaurant venture, "Hill Country Barbecue Market", by the school’s Eugene M. Lang Entrepreneurial Fund’s new business plan competition.

Not only is "Hill Country" considered a hot new restaurant in NYC (30 West 26th Street), but it has been given great reviews by the NY Times, NY Magazine and The Wall Street Journal to name a few.

And what makes his restaurant so unique? I'll give you a hint. You're going to need a lot of napkins!

It's all about Texas barbeque at "Hill Country" ...and it stems from Marc's grandfather who was the mayor of Lockhart, Texas where his family dates back four generations.

Per Marc, as a child,
Hill Country Barbeque"I looked forward to my Texas visits, where I indulged in all the local traditions, including eating smoked sausages and barbecue at the legendary Kreuz Market, drinking Big Red Soda, cooling off with Blue Bell Ice Cream, and enjoyed the sounds of Austin’s rock, blues and country music. Whether I was listening to my grandfather’s proud tales of growing up in the Lone Star State, or traveling with family and friends through Central Texas “Hill Country,” these are the memories that inspired me to open a New York City restaurant to honor the barbecue and live music capital of Texas."
Tell me you're not salivating after watching that video above! Incidentally, the most popular item is the Brisket (Marc’s favorite is the Prime Rib!).
"No other barbecue place that has opened in recent years has gotten it so right, right out of the gate. Hill Country is one of the finest new barbecue spots to open in New York in quite some time. The brisket is a thing of balance and beauty." -NY Times
And with the quote above, I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you order!

Check out his menu below! +/-

...And if you think you've seen the "Glosserman" name before on DT, you're right.  Let's not forget about Marc's younger successful filmmaker brother Scott Glosserman (C'99, Sigma Chi, Friars)!

$350,000 Netflix Competition: She's In The Final 10 and Needs Your Vote! (VIDEO)

Monday, June 29, 2009

Kristin Fairweather NetflixKristin Fairweather (Penn Grad '01, Masters in Government Administration, Alumni Relations) is in the running for winning a  $350,000 production grant and a guarantee of a premiere at next year’s LA Film Festival. ...and they need your vote!

Once producer Kristin and writer/director Jenny Deller found out they were one of the top 10 semi-finalists in the Netflix Find Your Voice competition, they were tasked with creating the above 3-minute short that reflected the feature in style or theme.

Netflix CompetitionTasked with shooting a 3-minute short they decided against doing a traditional trailer and shot a stand-alone script called "Save the Future" that we bill as "a companion piece" to the feature length film (and recent Nantucket Film Festival screenplay award winning) Future Weather.  If they are selected as the winner of the Netflix contest then they get the funds to shoot the feature.
"Save the Future" Netflix Short description:
In Deller's 3-minute companion short for the Netflix competition, FUTURE WEATHER's protagonist reimagines a day in her life as a public service announcement, blurring the lines between family struggles and fear of environmental apocalypse.

 Future Weather Feature logline:
Future Weather, is a coming-of-age tale about a 13-year-old environmentalist. Central to the stories of three rural women, is the gifted but lonely Laduree, an aspiring conservationist whose experiments to save the planet from global warming are destroyed when her single mom runs away to find herself.
Check out the film above.  It really is a beautiful piece of work!

UPenn Jewelers
Another case of Penn alumni (lawyers) with other careers!

Former college roommates (in photo to left: l to r:) Jessica Bohrer, (C'99 (technically graduated in '98), SDT) and Rebecca Richards (C'99, Theta) were inspired by vintage pieces handed down from their mothers and grandmothers and fell in love with the idea of taking something old and making it new. After a few months of brainstorming, their company Dalla Nonna (which translates from italian to "from the grandmother") was born!

Just a day after their ten-year reunion weekend a couple of weeks ago, Jessica and Rebecca launched the first collection of their jewelry line on Dalla Nonna: the calendar necklace.  Per Jess:
"Dalla Nonna’s signature piece, the calendar necklace, exemplifies dalla nonna’s blend of tradition and trend. derived from an old tie pin of jess’ grandpa howard, each piece is executed in 14k yellow, white or rose gold or sterling silver, and accented with a sapphire in a color chosen by the wearer to commemorate a date of her choosing (could be a birthday, graduation, anniversary, mother's day (may 10th!), birth of a child or any other important date).  With its sleek and modern design, the calendar necklace is a subtle statement piece that allows the wearer to hold a date that is close to her heart even closer still. The calendar necklace is the perfect way to mark a birthday, bat mitzvah, engagement or wedding and a great way to congratulate a graduate!"
Although they're relatively new to the market, they've already been getting great press; Entertainment Weekly, the "Ellen DeGeneres Show", Daily Candy and Urban Baby have featured them in the past month!

Per the film's website, the synopsis of the film is as follows:

Despite the warnings of her undertaker best friend Shane and her roommate Lila, she finds herself connecting to someone for the first time. Searching for answers, Carys goes to see her estranged mother to confront her past. Pennalicious Profile: You'll Want To Tune Into His Next Show

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Roy BankOver the past few days, we've been talking about Roy Bank (C'94), reality head honcho over at Mark Burnett Productions and now President of Merv Griffin Television.

I have mentioned that Roy oversaw such Mark Burnett shows as Apprentice, Survivor, RockStar and Contender...

Before Roy left, he not only created and executive produced Are You Smarter that a 5th Grader?, but he also produced another clever reality show that's sure to be a hit that comes out this summer on CBS.

More on the show here!

Read Part 1: "He's Way Smarter Than a Fifth Grader"
Read Part 2: "He's Now Running This TV Empire"
Read Part 3: "His Hollywood Beginnings and His Biggest Piece of Advice"

Roy's next show, Jingles, will have contestants concocting commercial jingles for real products.

Per RealityTVWorld.com:
"Each one-hour episode of the tentatively-titled series will follow a team of contestants who are given weekly advertisement-writing assignments before having to perform the catchy campaign they created. The products they're pitching could include anything from food or toys to a sports' team fight song or TV show theme. In addition to having to impress a panel of yet-to-be-announced judges and the studio audience, the contestants will also have to wow home viewers -- who will vote for their favorite following each broadcast to determine a weekly winner."
Clever and potentially cringe-worthy music WITH product placement?! I'll be watching for sure!

Roy's got some other shows coming soon but too early to talk about. But from what I've heard, these too are going to be some great programs!

Love Week: She's Got the Opposite of Love

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

This week, I've posted Penn related stories about love on TV, love in the movies and today, I've got love in print.

Lawyer-turned-author Julie Buxbaum (C'99) just released "The Opposite of Love", a book that has some hot buzz around it.

Click to check out the synopsis:...+/-

Per Julie's website:
"With perfect pitch for the humor and heartbreak of everyday life, Julie Buxbaum has fashioned a heroine who will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has loved and lost and loved again.

When successful twenty-nine year old Manhattan attorney Emily Haxby ends her happy relationship just as her boyfriend is on the verge of proposing, she can't explain to even her closest friends why she did it. Somewhere beneath her sense of fun, her bravado and her independent exterior, Emily knows that her breakup with Andrew has less to do with him and more to do with…her. "You're your own worst enemy,” her best friend Jess tells her. "It's like you get pleasure out of breaking your own heart."

As the holiday season looms, and Emily contemplates whether she made a huge mistake, the rest of her world begins to unravel: She is staffed on a multimillion-dollar lawsuit where she must defend the very values she detests by a boss who can’t keep his hands to himself; her Grandpa Jack, a charming, feisty octogenarian and the person she cares most about in the world, is losing it, while her emotionally distant father has left her to cope with this alone; and underneath it all, fading memories of her deceased mother continue to remind her that love doesn't last forever.

How this brave, original young heroine decides to take control of her life and face the fears that have long haunted her is the great achievement of Julie Buxbaum’s marvelous first novel. Written with the authority, grace, and wisdom of an author far beyond her years, The Opposite of Love heralds the debut of a remarkable talent in contemporary fiction."
Get "The Opposite of Love" here

Julie's path to becoming an author is an interesting and inspiring one..especially for anyone who has dreamed of quitting his/her days jobs to pursue their passion.

Ask Dave Baronoff (C'99, L'02 - Mask and Wig, AEPi ) who is currently working as an associate producer for JJ Abrams on Cloverfield, one of the hottest movies coming out this year. Dave says "the movie is almost as terrifying as my 40 more years of Stafford loan repayment."
