Scott Glosserman's Documentary on the Implications of Wikipedia (TRAILER)

Friday, June 12, 2009

Scott Glosserman
After co-writing, producing and directing the clever horror movie Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Scott Glosserman (C'99, Friars) is soon to complete his next project (as a producer and co-director) and it has to do with a different type of horror - — me, you, and thousands of other users taking over responsibilities for Britannica and The World Book.

In his documentary Truth in Numbers?, Scott takes us on the journey about the phenomenon that Wikipedia has become.

Per Scott,
"The question of whether you and I should be charged with canonizing the sum of human knowledge or whether that should be left to the scholars/experts really intrigues me. I think it’s safe to say that we’re among a populist revival era right now and nowhere is that more acutely reflected than on Wikipedia. If knowledge is power and history really is written by the winners, then Wikipedia, already the second most widely read publication in human history, clearly demonstrates this power shift towards "The People". The documentary tries to explore implications of that, among other things."

Popular Gameshow Win for Penn Alum! (VIDEO)

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Did you see Harris Cohen (C'95, DTD, Penn Medical Scholar, West Philadelphia Tutoring Project) on Jeopardy last week?

This family physician won the first two nights (Game 1: $9400, Game 2: $8400) until he was defeated on the 3rd show.

Check out the edited clip above from Harris' first night's win and find out the "silly" question Harris asked Alex Trebek when he first tried out for the show as a teenager!

She's A FOX TV Producer By Day and a Jeweler By Night

Jeweler Kim Rittberg
There seems to be many Penn alumni with multiple careers.

Just a week ago, I posted a story about THESE former college roommate lawyers with a jewelry business.  Now news of another alum with a TV day job with a similar side passion for designing jewelry!

When she's not producing and writing for "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" on Fox News, Kim Rittberg (C'02, UA, Kappa Alpha Theta) is a jewelry designer with her own jewelry line - k ritt jewelry.

The line has been featured in Women's Wear Daily, Life & Style, Playboy, NY Daily News, nymag.com, Scheckys, CW11, NY1, Newsday, NY Post, worn by Heidi Klum and Sarah Silverman and has been sold at Henri Bendel in New York and other boutiques in Manhattan.

Click HERE to find out more about:
  • what inspired Kim to pursue her own dreams
  • her attention-getting signature piece: the "Asymmeterical Necklace"
  • her career working in television
And apparently juggling careers runs in Kim's family.  Check out the post I did on her Penn alum brother Matt Rittberg HERE.

On a related note, the Penn Club of Los Angeles will be kicking off their Fall '09 events with a John Legend Concert on September 1 at the Greek Theater!

Please note that this is not a private concert and there unfortunately won't be a meet and greet with John. ...But perhaps if you hold up Penn signs you'll probably get a shout out from him!

Hanging Out with Todd Lieberman at His Very Engaging Hollywood Premiere of The Proposal

The Proposal and UPenn
This past Monday, I attended the Hollywood premiere of Producer and good friend Todd Lieberman's (C'95, Mask and Wig, AEPi) film The Proposal at Hollywood's El Capitan Theater.  (Photo to right (l to r): Todd and I)

Before I get to the actual Hollywood "scene" of this premiere, I have to say that I really enjoyed this movie and it feels good to know that a guy I call one of my best friends is glowing at the response of having a hit movie on his hands.  The casting was right on the money with Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, and Betty White (plus a great scene stealer from "The Office"'s Oscar Nunez). Not only were there many funny scenes due to the pleasantly awkward tension between Bullock's and Reynolds' characters, but there was some great heart to the film as well. Definitely a great date movie.

Here's a good summary summary of the movie (per Yahoo Movies):
"When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she's actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she's tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences."
Now onto the afterparty...

Some highlights included catching up with other Penn alumni including Todd's wife Heather (Zeegen) Lieberman (C'94, SDT), and actress Elizabeth Banks (C'96) and her husband and film producer Max Handelman (C'95, AEPi).

And then I saw a bunch of celebs, but decided to approach only two.  And before I tell you what I said, I fully acknowledge the awkwardness in my attempt at conversation with some of these celebrities, yet in the following 2 cases, I felt the need to approach them:
    Betty White and The Proposal
  • I said hello to Jesse James and complimented him on how well he performed in this past season's "Celebrity Apprentice". He was very nice and thanked me. While his wife Sandra Bullock was right beside him in another conversation, I decided to save my "you were great in the movie" comment and walk away with my dignity.
  • I had to say hello to "Golden Girl" Betty White. She was extremely nice and approachable and I thanked her for all the years of laughter she brought to me (I know this sounds really cheesy, but it was sincere). She was very gracious and agreed to take a picture with me.
The Proposal hits theaters on June 19.

UPenn Jewelers
Another case of Penn alumni (lawyers) with other careers!

Former college roommates (in photo to left: l to r:) Jessica Bohrer, (C'99 (technically graduated in '98), SDT) and Rebecca Richards (C'99, Theta) were inspired by vintage pieces handed down from their mothers and grandmothers and fell in love with the idea of taking something old and making it new. After a few months of brainstorming, their company Dalla Nonna (which translates from italian to "from the grandmother") was born!

Just a day after their ten-year reunion weekend a couple of weeks ago, Jessica and Rebecca launched the first collection of their jewelry line on Dalla Nonna: the calendar necklace.  Per Jess:
"Dalla Nonna’s signature piece, the calendar necklace, exemplifies dalla nonna’s blend of tradition and trend. derived from an old tie pin of jess’ grandpa howard, each piece is executed in 14k yellow, white or rose gold or sterling silver, and accented with a sapphire in a color chosen by the wearer to commemorate a date of her choosing (could be a birthday, graduation, anniversary, mother's day (may 10th!), birth of a child or any other important date).  With its sleek and modern design, the calendar necklace is a subtle statement piece that allows the wearer to hold a date that is close to her heart even closer still. The calendar necklace is the perfect way to mark a birthday, bat mitzvah, engagement or wedding and a great way to congratulate a graduate!"
Although they're relatively new to the market, they've already been getting great press; Entertainment Weekly, the "Ellen DeGeneres Show", Daily Candy and Urban Baby have featured them in the past month!

Is this Penn Undergrad the Next John Legend? (VIDEO)

Monday, June 1, 2009

Malik SmithWhile he's still an undergrad, Malik Smith (C'10) is a musician we should all be looking out for.

With his new single “Crazy” from his debut EP, "Before Dawn", already becoming a fan favorite on Reverbnation and drawing comparisons to last summer’s smash hit “Closer” by Ne-Yo;  Malik is only a brush stroke away from success.

Per Malik,
“I am a musician for the people…I write songs that connect to the simple yet universal things in life: happiness, love, lust, family, hardship, courage and triumph. I love music because I know there is a song for every moment”.
Check out the smooth stylings of Malik in his video above for his new single "Crazy" and look out for more about him on DT in the future!
