Morning News Covers Jordan Zucker's Female Fantasy Football League

Friday, September 12, 2008

upennHave you ever heard of an all female fantasy football league?

Jordan Zucker (C'97, Kappa Alpha Theta, captain of UPenn Equestrian team, Stimulus Children's Theater) has been running one for three years now and has just recently caught the attention of the morning news.  See her segment above.  (In the clip above, Jordan is actually video chatting with another Penn alum Jaime Herman (C'01) for her picks.)

Per Jordan, "We started out as all first timers and learned how to play together. Now we’re schooling the guys."

If you check out Jordan's site, you'll see that she does a weekly video/wrap up which includes:
  • Studs and Duds
  • Best Man Pile
  • Best Man Hug
  • Best Body Jump
Incidentally, Jordan is no stranger to TV.  A couple of years ago,  she was featured on close to 10 episodes of Scrubs playing the character of "Lisa" (click here to see her in action!)

They Gave Him a Shoutout on Last Night's Fringe

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Did you see JJ Abrams' new show Fringe last night?

If you did, you may have missed a quick shout out to Bad Robot (production company behind Fringe) exec Dave Baronoff (C'99, L'02, Mask and Wig, AEPi ). Watch the short clip above to check it out (minute 7:35)!

The show is really well done and the characters and story are well developed.  The reviews also are great...
upenn
The New York Times says:
"… as pilots go, this one is sensational, an artful, suspenseful mix of horror, science fiction, layered conspiracies and extended car chases. "Fringe" sets out to stretch the boundaries of conventional network series. …"

The Hollywood Reporter says:
"… What really makes "Fringe" so promising is that it is potentially reminiscent, in a small way, of the battle-of-the-sexes charm that once made "Moonlighting" the best hour of TV of its time. "

After I published this post,  Dr. Mark Milstein (C'97, Mask and Wig) notified me that he is quoted on the Popular Mechanics website regarding the scientific/medical accuracy of Fringe's Pilot episode.

When a Freshman Vlogs About His First Week at Penn

Friday, September 5, 2008

upenn

If you ever forgot how you felt your first week of Penn, listen to Kevin Shapiro (C'12) vlog about his first week of going out, losing sleep and just partying.

My favorite part is the promise he makes to himself in minute 1:02 ...because his first class starts at 11am. It's my favorite because (1) we've all made promises like this and (2) if he's going to be partying, I'll tell you he's not waking up early to do this!

What promises did you make like this at Penn? Comment below!

His Artistic Eye: New Talent from the Class of 2012

Thursday, September 4, 2008

upennThe school year just started and another new crop of diverse and talented freshmen are now on campus, embracing traditions and getting ready to campaign ...not only for Obama and McCain, but for themselves. (Freshmen, get some ideas as to how last year's candidates used video to promote themselves here!). The Class of 2012 is getting ready to be part of the next cycle at Penn.

To kick things off, meet Alex Remnick (C'12, Penn PreCollege programs '06, '07) who is already making a name for himself in the world of photography.

Per Alex,
"In the work I take most seriously, I strive to combine aesthetic quality with a conceptual significance. Unfortunately, at some point in their journey, most photographers become either technically or thematically focused. The technical minds create works that are beautiful but shallow and the "artists" create work that may be significant, but is often ugly and cryptic. I think it's important that art remains visually beautiful, even if the topics it covers aren't."
Alex's work includes the following:
    upenn
  • Portraits of authors Rick Brody for the New York Times (see here) and Peter Schjeldahl for Art Forum magazine (photos used for their respective books).
  • Five of Alex's images featured in New York's Zelnick Media building (they're the company who produced "Grand Theft Auto")
  • Photo work for a book on child psychology co-written by Penn graduate, Susan Davis (C'78).
Take a look at some of Alex's pieces here:

Class of 2012, if any of you want me to publish your story, find out here how you can submit your news to me here!

The Red Band Trailer You'll Want to See

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Elizabeth Banks
Elizabeth Banks (C'96) continues to make news this week and I continue to report it...

Over this past year, I have been reporting that Liz will be starring in the upcoming Kevin Smith film, Zach and Miri Make a Porno (October 31).  There's been all sorts of good buzz surrounding this film.

Recently Kevin Smith managed to get the ratings committee to bring the film's rating from NC-17 down to an R.  And news came yesterday that the film will actually be closing the Woodstock Film festival.

Now, the red band trailer for this film just came out and it looks very funny.
