Penn actors Roy Vongtama (C'96), Lesley Wolff (C'93) and Alex Petrovitch (C'01)

UPennIn this week's Tuesday Tips series, I have enlisted the help of my Penn alumni actor friends out here in Los Angeles to offer advice to the Penn undergrad or alum who has decided to move out to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

Between the three of them, Roy Vongtama (C'96), Lesley Wolff (C'93), and Alex Petrovich (C'01) have done TV, Film and stagework and have offered up some great advice to all of you including answers to the following questions:

Who are the best acting coaches?
Who are some good photographers to take my headshots?

Where should I get my headshots done?

Penn Alum Flashes Goods, Hollywood Throws Beads

For today's Mardis Gras celebrations, I have an especially topical Hollywood post for all of you.

Here's one Hollywood writer with something to be happy about.

Josh Heald's (W'00, Editor-in-Chief 34th Street Magazine('99), Penn Jazz) first movie, Mardis Gras is getting produced. And this writer is working with another Penn alum producer to get it made.

Per Josh,
"The comedy follows three college seniors on a trip to Mardi Gras that is supposed to make up for their lackluster college experience. Once they're met with the reality of 100,000 sweaty people crammed into 8 city blocks, their challenges mount and friendships are tested, as they vow not to return to school without a story to tell. ...And there's naked boobs, of course, because boobs are awesome."
Click here to find out how Josh got his start as a writer in Hollywood, who will be starring in the film and what other Penn alum producer he's working with!!

Did you know that the Penn engineers build a race car every year for an annual collegiate competition?

Formula SAE is a collegiate competition held every year in May in Michigan. Around 120 schools compete with open cockpit race cars powered by motorcycle engines.

According to Gregor Zetsche (Eng '08), "Formula SAE started 4 years ago, and currently is sponsored by the engineering school as well as other sponsors (GM, Daimler and lots of other companies). We build the car in the Towne building on campus. Its entirely built by students from the school, most of which are mechanical engineers. We've had lots of people do internships at GM and other car companies, but we've only had about 4 people graduate since the teams inception. One of the alumni (Laurence) actually worked on the new Hummer H3."

His video metaphor for leaving college

There certainly are a good number of digital animations coming out of Penn these days.

Brendan Marnell (C'05) created a very cool short called "The Lift" for his Fine Arts thesis project from his 2005 senior year.

Per Brendan, "It's a short animation about a character leaving the world he knows to enter a future he cannot predict. He faces rejection, but ultimately finds a path for himself. Looking back, I think it has a lot more to do with my own situation of leaving school than I realized at the time."

Can you see this in the video?

Brendan currently works as an animator and graphic designer outside DC.

...Reminds me of another video I posted about a few months ago having to do with graduating from college.

Penn Producer Debuts Movie Trailer during SuperBowl

Sunday, February 3, 2008

Did you see Marc Platt's (C'79, Glee Club) movie trailer for his upcoming film Wanted during the first half of today's Superbowl? It looked really cool. (Marc's previously produced projects include Legally Blonde and Broadway's Wicked)

Wanted stars Angelina Jolie and comes out next June. Per Yahoo Movies, here is the Wanted plot synopsis:
"25-year-old Wes was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox. After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors--including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan--Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny. "
