Mike Karz (C'89, W'89) strikes 2 year first-look deal with Warner Brothers

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

UPennIt's no surprise that Penn alumni have taken over Hollywood and today it was announced that another Hollywood established alum, Mike Karz (C'89, W'89) continues this trend with the news that he just stuck a 2 year, first-look deal with Warner Brothers.

Per Variety, "Karz already has several projects in the works at the studio [Warner Brothers] and has just sold his first pitch under the pact. The project, called "Blended," is a comedy about families coping with remarriages. ...Under the pact, Karz Entertainment will be based on the lot in Burbank and produce features and direct-to-DVD projects for the studio."

Other projects Mike has in the works include:
Good Luck Chuck - (per Variety) In the film, "Dane Cook plays a serial dater who gets a reputation that any woman dating him will rebound into meeting her soulmate. When the man meets his true love, he must find a way to end the streak and keep her." Click here to view the trailer!

Honeymoon with Harry - (per IMDB) "A man's fiancé dies 2 days before their wedding leaving the lover devastated. Oddly, he then goes on the honeymoon with his fiancé's father who despises him to scatter the ashes."

WXPN's eclectic music hits TV!

Sunday, July 22, 2007

I think most alumni know WXPN and their great eclectic music programming.

Kiera Reilly in alumni relations emailed me that the Penn-owned radio station recently announced that it is taking its show to TV! PBS began broadcasting a new show in May of 2007, “On Stage At World Cafe Live” featuring live performances recorded at University City ’s World Cafe Live concert venue.

For more information, go to http://worldcafelive.com/onstage/

On July 29 the show will review the best episodes of the season. (Check your local PBS listings for the full artist line-up as well as the series airdates, re-runs and times outside of Philadelphia!)

To my knowledge one Penn artist whose music has been played on WXPN and World Cafe is one of my favorites: Gabriel Mann (C'95).

Roy Vongtama (C'96) plays "Tibetan" on History Channel show

Thursday, July 19, 2007

Had this not been a busy week as well as me dealing with a (temporarily) disabled Facebook account, I would have said "Tivo alert!"

Dr. and actor Roy Vongtama (C'96) appeared on the History Channel's Decoding the Past: Tibetan Book of the Dead. He played a "spooked out Tibetan dude named Tenzin who dies and wakes up in the afterlife."

This already aired, but may come back in repeats. Check your local listings. Click here for more information

Also, watch out for Roy's appearance this summer as "Doctor Yang" in Warner Brother's The Bucket List starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, directed by Rob Reiner!

We've had our facebook account temporarily disabled. :(

When it comes back (which I hope should be in the next day or so), I'll be posting more on here! (I want to make sure everyone will be exposed to my new stories)

I've got plenty of posts about lots of alumni and undergrads in my queue, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, have you checked out the photos section?

Carlos Andrés Gómez (C'04) is a poet and he knows it

Sunday, July 15, 2007

Carlos Andrés Gómez (C'04), award-winning NYC poet and actor, has a voice. ...And it's channeled through his passion for the spoken word. After checking out his videos, the best word to describe this guy is captivating!

At Penn, Carlos was the founder of The Excelano Project one of the nation's premier spoken word/performance poetry collectives.

You may have seen him earlier this year on the cover of the February issue of Brass Magazine and on the most recent season of HBO's Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry.

His passion for this art form has opened doors into the acting world as well.

Click here to watch Carlos in action as he discusses his craft and his involvement in the film The Inside Man and HBO's Def Poetry.
